The closure of the Great Northern paper mill in 2008 has not been good for Millinocket at all, just like the demise of the sardine canneries in Eastport. The tourism just isn't enough to sustain the towns at the levels of the past.

Why would nursing homes be closing with an ageing population? If the older folks (FWIW I are one) are moving away as well. Where are they going?

I expect the high RE prices are still based on pre 2007 expectations. The sellers probably expect to finance a condo in Florida on their house in Maine. I think they missed their chance as the entire US economy had pretty much shut down working class prosperity.

No jobs, no $, no ability to pay house payments and maintenance.

Millinocket is having the same trouble.

Reduced reimbursement from the state. You see, it's not just the "able-bodied" that LePage is cutting. They are going to other nursing homes closer to more urban areas or out-of-state.

People are foolish for what they think they can get out of some places.

As an ombudsman in my state for long term care residents, I can assure you that operating a nursing home can, particularly in a depressed or rural area, be a business with exceedingly low operating margins. And, if profitability is highly affected by those paying as they go, vs government assistance. Doesn't matter how aging folks there are if noone wants to be in the area and operate on thin to no margins.

I get the Quoddy Tides where I am and saw the story on the closure of Oceanview and it's a shame, residents being moved to Machias and Calais, making it harder for family to visit. That and the closure of the high school and Oceanview employees with kids in school leaving for other jobs will put the remaining schools in financial dire straits when they lose funds yet costs remain fixed.

I know this is an old thread... This is my first post and this looks like a good thread to post my question.

We are thinking about moving to Eastport but have no connections to the city or the state. In other words, we would be "outsiders".

At least at first.

I kind of figured that the houses that are listed for sale are overpriced and this thread kind of confirmed that. But how would it look if I, as an admitted outsider, came in and made a realistic bid on a house? Would that seem as if I'm trying to lowball somebody or take advantage of a bad situation? Would it put me in bad stead with those who have been there for a long time?

Like anybody else, I don't want to overpay, but at the same time, I don't want my first official act in Eastport to be one that seems to be taking advantage of a local due to an unfortunate situation.

I thank you in advance for your honest opinion on this and hope to find a solution that will help me get things started on the right foot (if and when moving day comes) without forcing me to pay an unrealistic price for a house.

Make your offer this fall. A lot of those houses you see may be owned by people who came in and bought them up, hoping to make a buck.

We have never been to Eastport. Is there a discussion about the town on here?
