Wealth? Education? Have you seen rural NH and VT outside of the usual ski and tourist playgrounds? Small population doesn’t make much of a difference either - Jackson isn’t that much larger than Manchester for example. And lastly, as far as “liberal policies” go, are you saying playing catch and release with known violent criminals helps curb gun violence?

My guess is . . . the people with the guns chief. No guns = no shootings. It's simple.

Low population density in most of the state might have something to do with it. I have no doubt that if you looked up the stats that more shootings happen in urban areas vs. rural ones.

I kinda relate. Born and raised in NJ. Been living in FL the past 7 years. But I want to move back up north, possibly to Mass. I'm curious on the opinions of those who started North, moved south and want to come back up. I'll be reading the comments here.

This is a generalization but a lot of times the people that regret their moves are those that move for the wrong reasons, mainly cost of living.

Cost of living is a “more money now, less money later “ thing if you own real estate. It all equals out in the end.

Sad to see that this thread has derailed into a gun control discussion.

No matter what side you are on regarding guns, I'm sure we can all agree there are better forums to have this discussion on.

This is a good point. While there are some exceptions of places that are just really expensive, for the most part, things sort of equalize and there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Places with lower CoL often have lower wages. Places with lower taxes in some aspects, have higher taxes/fees in other aspects. Or they may lack some public services. etc.

Wait, so if it’s all about population density shouldn’t Somerville have bullet-ridden carcasses piling up as far as eye can see?

That and if you own real estate in Boston, you’re going to gain more equity than real estate in Raleigh (although Raleigh is catching up). So while you may not immediately realize those gains, it will be in your net worth should you choose to someday retire to a lower COL area.

Most people that move to a lower COL area don't save more money, because they end up spending more money. So instead of that money sitting in equity in real estate, it goes to things like cars, vacations, etc.

This has been my observation as well.

For some that might be the reason they move to a lower cost of living area - so they can afford nicer cars and vacations.
