We took our son out of Key Biscayne K-8 after just one month. We went with a private school and it worked much better!

In Miami, if you want your child to get a good education and to be safer from drugs and other issues, private/parochial schools are the way to go.

Probably the 3 best private schools are also in the nicer parts of town, that being, in no particular order, Westminster Christian, Gulliver, and Ransom Everglades.
Christopher Columbus and it's sister school Lourdes are also considered very good.

Then again, I would not be moving to Miami if I had kids, especially daughters.

Drugs? Private schools run the drug game in the suburbs. Here and everywhere else.

Consider buying a cheaper house or larger one for the same money, and use a decent private school. Well worth it, IMO. Even the "good" public schools are not worth paying the $100k or more premium for the comparable house (more like $200k if you have a mortgage...that's a UM Bachelor's degree!), plus higher property tax and insurance annually.

We lived Ina really working class area and both my sons went to christian elementary then blue lakes, then glades and finally we had then at ferguson High in west Kendall. All very good schools, but we found that unless we were involved they wouldn't get what the schools offered.

Florida Christian was a private school and we noticed a huge difference in the quality. Reason we had to leave them was that ex husband lost his job at that time and there was no way we could afford it.

I know a lot of poor working class folks that come home from work and it is another full time job with the kids and the weekends are all about education. These folks have both kids in Harvard and are Chinese, and Latin Americans.

Not to say that you shouldn't have them in the best schools, but a lot of the environment and parent to child education goes a long way.
