The popular argument on City Data is that just because other places do it doesn't make it right... That is absolutely true, however, it is hypocritical to chastize Mississippi and pretend Mississippi is exclusive to this behavior.

You must also realize that just because it happened in a particular place doesn't mean all people in that place condone it.

Face the facts, this entire country is hung up on race, people are judged by race, and most likely always will be unless people change drastically.

Yeah. We're talking about one town - population 2,000 +- - in a state of 3 million people. The movie should have been titled Prom Night in Charleston, because being in Mississippi, when you think about it, it just incidental to the subject. Maybe it just sells tickets, like "Mississippi Burning" would, and "Nevada Burning" wouldn't.

The high school in question, oddly enough, has no other defining characteristic other than what has been discussed.
It is ranked nationally almost squarely in the middle - 9799 out of 19379, And ranked statewide almost squarely in the middle - 138 out of 286. 124 White kids; 304 Black kids in 4 grades. You could almost go to sleep reading the statistics.

But the city fathers and mothers always had a separate prom. That's the way it had always been. It's different now, of course, and that's the point. Long after I'm gone there will be a 50th reunion of the graduates of the class of '08. They will have told their grandchildren that they went to the "first ever......". And that's nice.

I have traveled as well, and Mississippi may have it's problems, but it's far from your description. You just need a month or two in a place that really is less fortunate.
3 Million, in the entire state??? Really?

Hmmm, I didn't know that.

Every state has a redeeming factor.

What is more disturbing about what reminded me of Prom Night in Mississippi is this: it took place in 2008.
It's true, especially in the Delta! It's a different world on all levels, different mindset! Now the Delta do have some pluses, great food, some of the most down to earth people, great hunting, good entertainment! Being from there have humbled me and just make me very grateful of my Blessings!
