Only four songs got my vote, Otis(thought slightly boring), Doors, Hugh Masekela(nice instrumental), Marvin Gaye. For the first time in these sixties polls, no Beatles tune got my vote.

Whew!!

I went with Otis also, plus Love is Blue and Love Child from that list. But equal or better to those that year, IMHO, were....

Turn Around, Look at Me - The Vogues

Time Has Come Today - Chambers Brothers

Scarborough Fair/Canticle - Simon & Garfunkel

My favorite would be Mrs Robinson, followed by Dock of the Bay, Hey Jude, this Guys in Love With You, Love is Blue, I Heard it through the Grapevine, and Love Child

I really like Scarborough Fair/Canticle too, although it really is from 1966 ( Parsley Sage) although the version from The Graduate is a bit longer and that was released in '68.

Back in the day, I had no idea of the song's origin and just assumed it was a new Simon & Garfunkel song. Only recently, thanks to the marvel of the Internet, I discovered that it is an English Ballad centuries old in origin....and there have been many other versions along the way.

This one, to me, is at least as beautiful to the ear and more pleasing to the eye....

The thing about years like 1968 is that 5 to 8 songs came on the charts and 5 to 8 went off. If you listened to top 40 radio you would hear a fair amount of country mixed in with the pop/rock/soul songs. Here's a few:

Skip A Rope- Henson Cargill---(January)
Pledge Of Love- Bobby Goldsboro--(February)
Folsom Prison Blues- Johnny Cash--(May)
Harper Valley PTA- Jeanie C. Riley (Sept.)
Jody and the Kid- Roy Drusky (October)
Stand By Your Man- Tammy Wynette (November)

The instrumental "Love Is Blue" was number one in my area for 4 weeks in January and February

And "Hey Jude" was number one for a couple months in the tail end of 1968.

45's by Cream, Steppenwolf, Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Deep Purple, and more!

Tin Pan Alley schtick?? YEA BABY!! How about these 45's???--------"Loving You has made Me Bananas"--Guy Marks

AND "Tip Toe Through the Tulips"--Tiny Tim

A song that was critical of big business---"Mr. Businessman"-Ray Stevens

I could go on and on regarding 1968. An awesome year for music.

Here is my personal top 10 of obscure 1968 songs:

Thank U Very Much- Scaffold
October Country- October Country
You Got To be Loved- Montanas
Two Bit Manchild- Neil Diamond
A Question Of Temperature- Balloon Farm
Can I Carry Your Balloon?- Swampseeds
Here's to you- Hamilton Camp
Free Spirit- Crispian St. Peter
L.David Sloane- Michelle Lee
Hey Western Union Man- Jerry Butler

1968--YESSSSSS!!!!!

OR____try THESE ten;

San Francisco Girls-Fever Tree
Stay In My Corner-Dells
Smell Of Incense- Southwest F.O.B.
Barefoot In Baltimore-Strawberry Alarm Clock
Reflections Of The Way Life Used To be- Supremes
Kentucky Woman- Deep Pueple
Break Your Promise- Delfonics
Jelly Jungle- Lemon Pipers
Alice Long- Tommy Boyce/Bobby Hart
Call me Lightning- Who

I'll check those out HH! I'm always looking for good '60s sounds.
Regarding country-tinged hits on the top 40, it's a shame that "Wichita Lineman" didn't make #1. Wikipedia lists it as a #1 country hit and # 3 on the pop charts.

Another great rock tune from '68 made #3 in the UK, but went nowhere in the states. Many British rock stars (you know, the type that always seem to get quoted in Mojo) cite 'Tin Soldier' by Small Faces as one of the great rock tunes. So here it is -- Classic rock '68 style!
