Hard to believe. Self-hatred doesn't lend itself to positive results. Just saying.

Disagree. The Dominican Republic ranks second and the United States 114th in the world's happiest countries. I would doubt that a country filled with self-hatred would rank so high in this index.

Who's doing the ranking? How is happiness measured?

I’m sure she is a mixture of Spanish, African and Indian and thus should identify with that. As far as the stigma of being Puerto Rican in NYC especially it is hard to escape. Many of the immigrants that came during the 1950’s were poor and uneducated, where as in PR there are so many amazingly educated and proud people that she should get in touch with. I grew up in NYC with many Puerto Ricans and they either lived in the projects or their parents were supers etc, but their children went on to college. Similar to all immigrant groups in the states.... to be white in America you need to be descended from the Quakers. If you are Puerto Rican you cannot be a white American
There are many white folks not descended from Quakers or English for that matter. And not every single person in PR is a mixture of races, many if not most are. The posters wife could have parents from Galicia or Ireland.. not too many Taino or Africans there.

What do you define as happy? How can you quantify happiness in a research study? What's the measure? Sorry, I don't put much stock into research that tries to measure intangibles.

i dont believe both of those things mentioned in this post (this and the other guys response) are mutually exclusive. my wife stayed in dominican republic for a time period as a missionary. i would believe she would classify them as happy. however, from what i have heard, they also have negative perceptions about some of their characteristics. like their "pelo malo" and dark skin.

but i think that you can have your issues with your physical characteristics and background and still be happy.

oh and being happy doesnt mean dominicans love living in their country. im sure a lot of them would love to leave to another country if they could. but the puerto ricans take the ones they catch and ship them back to the dominican republic.
