I was driving home from work going north on Rt 287 and from about exit 23 to 33ish, I heard this tremendously loud high pitched buzzing. Mind you, I'm going 80mph, had the windows shut plus talk radio going on and I could clearly hear this really loud noise like I've never heard in my life. At first I thought there was something wrong with my car but as I opened my window I noticed a bunch of them flying everywhere in the woods. 4 or 5 of them went splat on my windshield...

I'm used to the annual cicadas but these things are a whole different bowl of wax... Here I thought all the news stories about these 17 year cicadas were a bunch of bs. Thankfully they haven't been seen in my town (yet).

Yup, that's right near where I live and work and sounds about accurate. They're obnoxiously loud at my job, which is right around exit 26-30.

They should be gone this week. If you haven't heard them or seen them by now in your area, I don't think you will. I was in Bloomingdale again this week at the same house I did last week, and while still there, the cicada volume was way lower. More of a soft distant whistle, rather than an impending alien invasion. I believe their cycle is nearing completion.

Then the sound ended abruptly as we came into Rahway; there weren't any even in the park there.

I remember a few years ago, the shells littered the ground in Princeton, but there weren't any to be seen in New Brunswick. Maybe they have a strong preference for affluent communities?
You know, I've wondered the same thing. Some expensive homes are surrounded by plenty of trees.
