J1N, I'm actually from Hudson County....born & raised there....and just can't think of anyone I know (aside from Joe Piscipo) who "tawks" like that!
I read you were from Hudson County (what exit ) and got a warm feeling inside. I figured I had a new Dos Amigos connection. I usually drive up a couple times a month to pick up some sandwiches and then I saw the "FLORIDA" thing on your post . I guess I'm back to the 100 mile round trip for a good Cuban sandwich!
It's not just Jersey. What do you think of a person when they say they are from West Virginia? What do you think of a person from New Orleans or Detroit or Beverly Hills or Seattle? What about a person from Camden, NJ? Slums, criminals, filthy rich, people who turn to rust......right?
I escaped Jersey a dozen years ago where I existed for almost 40 years. Most of the bad jokes have merrit. All good rumers start from some piece of the truth. All good generalizations start from some piece of the truth.
I do remember while driving west on 80, as soon as you crossed the bridge into Pennsylvania there was a huge billboard. It said: Welcome to Pennsylvania, America starts here. Some Jersey people hated this sign. When the criminal Whittman was made Governer she made them take the sign down. They did. The very very day she left office. Pennsylvania put the sign back up. Is it still there today?
I guess there is good and bad in any place. I miss a few things about Jersey but dont miss most of it.
When I was old enough to see that what I paid for one year of property taxes in Jersey was equivalent to a good down payment on a home anyplace else, I beat it outta there.

no. <entering more text 'cause my message was too short>
Yes there is some merit to stereotypes but we are not clones in NJ. There are other places where you have more of an arguement for that. That is not what everyone prefers believe it or not.
I had no idea about that sign. That is kind of funny. It is also kind of obnoxious. Parts of NJ(especially south NJ) are filled with very patriotic people. To really understand this country you have to look beneath the surface anyway. Real America or real Americans are not what and who we think much of the time.
There are many small minded, provencial, ignorant folks out there. I've lived in many states, and in many counties of NJ. Not only do many other parts of the country think of us as the "armpit of the nation", but we have our own prejudices from north to south, Shore to Trenton. It's a love-hate relationship sometimes; but NJ is energizing, we are difficult to understand, and can't be "catagorized". We all stay here for some reason despite the financial hardships, taxes, traffic, commuting, negative national image.
Yes, and if you love Casinos, Atlantic City going to build 4 more mega Casinos (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071216/FEATURES07/712160548 - broken link) ...
I can't wait to move back. I'm living large on the water in a "blue" county, and most of my neighbors are from somewhere else. Not a lot to complain about, right? BUT...the heart still yearns for New Jersey!!
