Haha, I call myself a gringo and an anglo. All my hispanic friends call me that. I don't care. I was raised here. So, that's kinda what I am.

I wonder if the OP has learned all the Spanish/Mexican/New Mexican cuss words yet. Most Anglo natives of the region know and use those as skillfully as their Hispanic counterparts. In that sense, at least, you could say that I'm fully bi-lingual--especially when my car or computer screws up . . .

And when I lived on the res in Mescalero when I was a kid, my friends called me "White Eyes". I wasn't offended: I knew my eyes were blue! lol

I hear gabacho used in Mexico more than gringo, which seems to be what white Americans call themselves in Mexico or in the SW.

The Mexican War origins of Gringo are interesting, kind of fun, but not true.

Doesn't the article say just the opposite? Says that's the more supportable theory if I'm reading it correctly.

The article does use that wording (that it is a more supportable theory) but how can you ignore the written, historical evidence of its use in Spain from long before the Mexican War.

Perhaps like the bow and arrow, it developed independently in both the new and old worlds?
