However, gentrification of the Brooklyn sort is rapidly happening in many of the working class neighborhoods like the Bywater, Irish Channel, and Treme.

I suggest doing the French Quarter as Bourbon Street is overrated but the FQ is the heart of our city. I am a native and still love walking through Royal Street or Chartres. It is absolutely beautiful.

Definitely take the bus or streetcar to Magazine Street/Garden District. Lots of shops, restaurants, people watching.

Definitely check out the Marigny/Bywater if you're into an innovative art/food/entertainment scene.

This city really has a lot to offer. Hope you have a good time!
My wife and I were just on Freret last night at Company Burger and I realized just how big of a hipster community is growing here. I, for one, am not opposed to that crowd, mainly because of their hyper-local tendencies...but I can see how other cities' hipster are a bit more annoying.

I also co-sign the Royal Street recommendation. We parked on Royal tonight and walked around the Quarter until heading to see the lighting of the HUGE Xmas tree there. We also went to our first Hookah bar on South Carrollton before heading home.

@Bronxguyanese, my apologies for coming in a bit hot before. I just didn't know what angle you were coming from. As usual, rburnett gave good suggestions. Excuse my abrasiveness earlier.
