I agree with stormgal. When the building is ready, agents have to get residents inside as soon as possible.

Now, you just have to pay rent starting with the lease date. You don't actually have to move in. My friend who won a lottery apartment took three months to buy furniture and kitchen stuff. But she was paying rent the whole time.

The ironic thing is, you wait for them to approve you, but they won't wait for you!

This is such a nice building in a happening, convenient area! Do whatever you need to do to not make waves and just get in. That's my advice.

They made me sign a lease that started THAT VERY DAY. Which I think is unreasonable for an affordable building--I basically had to pay double rent for most of the month. (I didn't really move in until the break date of my prior lease, though I did bring some stuff in like cleaning supplies and such.)

But, yeah, this is one of the sweeter deals out there. Dig deep (if you can without completely wrecking your finances, of course). Note: they will sign you for one- or two-year leases at the exact same rent. In other words, a built-in rent freeze for year two. Now, maybe this year that won't matter because it looks like we're probably going to get a freeze from the board anyway, but considering that it isn't too hard to get out of these leases you'd need to be nuts not to sign the two-year.
