It's very complicated, and you can contact the tenants association to find out more:

https://www.stpcvta.org/

Under Contact, you will find the phone number. It's probably best to call and leave a message. Someone will get back to you. It's an all-volunteer organization.

You don't have to be a member in order to ask your question.

I also contacted the Tenants Assiciation and they were very helpful. I'm planning to volunteer my time too. I think they're doing a terrific job.

Some good news for folks that are already living in Stuytown and luck out with one of the lottery apartments: you're eligible to get your deposit back in full.
I just got my entire deposit back with a solid 22 months left on the old lease.

Congratulations to all those who won an apartment in the lottery! Hopefully, they will resume posting soon. There were a couple of times that they stopped posting for more than a week and then resumed it. The apartments are pretty big, and everyone in the neighborhood is pretty friendly, and you feel a sense of community here. I think it is worth checking the website often. Don't get your hopes down. wishing everyone who is in process best of luck.

Just curious, do we all think $3,600 for a 1 bedroom is 'affordable' these days?

I know people love Stuytown, but does this really belong in the 'affordable' category?

Ask liberal socialist democrats in Albany. They're the ones who passed 2019 new rent laws that took cap off RS rents.

Besides existing units there are tons of apartments in "affordable" lottery housing with rents > $3500 and all are rent stabilized.

https://newyorkyimby.com/2023/02/hou...manhattan.html

Working theory is having more upper moderate income households into RS system, they will be more likely to support rent control. Under luxury decontrol once a RS unit rent went to "X" and or household income exceeded "Y" unit was taken out of rent control.

STPCV would likely welcome having more if not all RS units with such high rents decontrolled and thus free market, but since that isn't possible they must deal with things as they are.

Your point however is well taken; $3,500 or more to live in STPCV be it market rate or RS seems excessive, but people are taking these units....

Great points. $3,500 is definitely relatively less expensive than other places, but for me, not really affordable.

Happy for those who this helps.
