NYC can't control every town in America, but the Feds should be able to...and they are woefully failing, in large part to massive lobbying by the NRA. I don't believe more permits should be issued....our problem is not that we are lacking an armed citizenry, it is that there are too many illegal guns from other "look the other way" states flooding the city.

Secondly, although we can't control what happens in other parts of the country, we know that what happens there affects us here...we are all in this together. Tightening controls will help..loosening them simply expands illegal guns.

Tell me what tightening controls mean? Everyone likes to use that term but im not sure what they want it to mean.

The permit process across the country checks the same criminal and mental health records.

While carry permits may be issued locally they are not valid elswhere unless there are reciprocal agreements. New york has no such agreements so anyone bringing a firearm in is doing so illegally already .

About the only tightening up i can see is having gun owners present what they bought for periodic inspection so they can show they havent sold them criminally.

Nyc has that as a rule already.. im not seeing much they can do on the legal ownership side with regulations and laws.

most illegal guns come from 2 sources.

straw purchases where folks who can get permits are paid by the bad guys to make multiple illegal purchases and give them the guns. that could be controlled better by limiting the number of purchases at a time and checking every so ofton that the purchaser still has them in their possession. already done by nyc.

the other is they are stolen out of the factories that make them. thats the biggest source.

If its not armed citizenry then why push law abiding citizens?

Why not focus on the illegal activity?

Straw purchases in nyc dont really happen. Our permit system is not condusive to it.

The mayor tried to orchestrate some illegal ones on his own to see if they would fly through and made a whole to do with a few dealers but they were found not guily of any wrong doings.

Sobroguy has a strange perspective on this issue. When it comes to the thugs responsible these shootings he repeatedly says they are bored youths doing what kids do. But when there is support for the average citizen to own guns as a defensive measure he makes it seem as if its going to be armageddon. Sobro, do you have a bias for the criminally inclined over regular citizens?

No Allen...thugs killing people are not misguided kids..they are str8 criminals. Youth fighting youth, assaults, gang behavior, you might say, is a right of passage in NYC and has been going on since the 1800s (maybe longer).

The answer to the problem is not arming the "average" citizen...having 100 people jam packed on the 2 train on the morning commute with loaded weapons is not a solution..that is a MAJOR problem, a catastrophe of epic proportions. By arming all citizens you are making it much easier to turn those "law-abiding average citizens" into the thugs you despise....that is no solution.

Indeed...rational thought is sorely missing in the world. Arming NYC residents as a solution is laughable.

It is the "youth" thugs who are doing the gun crimes. Not decent people who aren't involved in gangs, even if they possessed a weapon.

You are freaking out about the average person earning the right to defend themselves with a gun, but are very mild on the larger number of thugs who easily get from their gang pals.

Are you personally afraid some people involved in criminal activities might get shot if they mess with the wrong person who has a gun for self defense?
