I came across this article on the NYT. What do our guys think?

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/ed...agewanted=1&hp

So far its a sad look at our segregated school system. Being liberal as the NYT is, I wonder if the readers on the UWS who have a high readership of the NYT and aswells as NYT writers and editors of all races if they send thier kids to private schools? After reading this article, I am loss for words. Just glad taht I dont have any kids at the moment and dont have to worry about selecting what school that child has to enroll into. When New Yorkers two generations ago fought segregation in the south via freedom rides, they kept segregation in live and well here in NYC. I learned alot of great things attending NYC public schools I dont think it was that bad when I was a youth except for teachers mocking us by calling students you inner city youths.

New York City schools, especially the public high schools, are plagued with racial tensions. Thank god that part of my life is over.

Me too. SOme people dont know how I survived all three levels of NYC public schools. most people I know dropped out by high school. Its safe to assume that NYC public school systems have gotten alot worse since I graduated from high school a decade ago. I wonder what will happen when millennial Transplants who left suburbia for the big city like NYC, when these guys and girls settle down and have kids I wonder where they will enroll and send their kids to whatschools or if they will pack up and move back to Suburbia for better schools. Im not sure if these Transplants will wanna send their kids to a predominantly black school across the street from a housing project in Harlem.

If you are a parent who pick a school for your kid, would you go for the grades or the race? 70% of one race is not the problem as long as it has good grades.

People associate black with bad and white as good. The truth is Asian neigborhoods have good schools and excel far better than black and white counterparts.

Nowadays, when did you hear about racial tension in NYC schools?

As far as I know, everyone gets along just fine.

Hypothetically the schools should be getting better, but for whatever reason its not happening. The city was much more dangeous when I was in junior high/high school, there was no police force in the schools, and the schools were bigger and probably more overcrowded, yet they were better. Don't make no damn sense. What is missing?

According to the article white people thats whats missing from the schools. But when I was in high school the trickle of ghetto white native New Yorkers were just as bad as Ghetto Black and Hispanic students academically and also in behavior. I dont know whats wrong with the schools in this city and what component is needed to make public schools work again and lowering test standards is not going to help, it makes rest of the country laugh at us New Yorkers. Thank goodness I came out of public school alright!

My sister and I both went to schools with very few white people and received high quality public school education. In fact I wasn't around white people my same age until college. I don't think thats the complete issue. Sure it plays a part but there are a lot of factors.

it was a good school (im white btw)

second school was probably 90 pct white and was a complete joke
junior high was pretty mixed and was good

hs was 45% black, 45% asian and 10 pct white and was really good
