I am considering moving to Far Rockaway. There were a nubmer of theads on this topic before, I just want to see if anything has changed. I work in Manhattan, but I cannot afford any of the city prices any more.

Thank you for your help.
What is your budget/family size?

You work in the city and you want to commute from Far Rockaway? Wow, that is a long, tiring commute if you are taking the subway. You're better off taking the LIRR to Penn or Atlantic Ave and taking a train from there.
The better parts of Far Rockaway are the Beach 110 and up streets. But you are way out in the middle of no where.
I would even consider moving to Staten Island and taking the ferry into Manhattan before moving to far rockaway. F.R really isn't a pleasant place to live. There's absolutely nothing there besides a beach.
Thank you for your responses. Good idea about Staten Island
My budget is $1200 and it's two of us, my husband and I.
Thank you.
The best areas of the Rockaways are those with lots of homeowners. In Far Rockaway itself, the area with a lot of Hasidic homeowners is nice and safe. Arverne and Edgemere have nice communities of homeowners. Then Areas like Neponsit and Belle Harbor are beautiful as well.
The bottom line is, for a lot of people, if they are going to stay in NYC, their options are the Rockaways, some other part of Eastern Queens, North Bronx, some place way out in Staten Island because everything else is just too unaffordable. Yet mention anything of these places and people make catty remarks about its so far. If people aren't going to pony up money for your rent and they have no good realistic suggestions they need to shut up.
Not any more. Real estate is crazy. Nothing below $1350 for a studio anywhere...
A lot of people who have lived in rent stabilized apartments are blind to this fact. I pay 1000 for a studio in the North Bronx, close to Yonkers.
Any nicer neighborhood close to Manhattan will have one bedrooms pushing 2k.
