Hi everybody..
I scored 91.5 and chose the 9th jd, am interviewing tomorrow but have some quick questions if anyone can shed some light for me I'd greatly appreciate it!
1) does anyone know what union court assistant is in for the Hudson Valley area? ..& is there a current contract available to view?
2) for someone with state time (tier 4) what's retirement time look like (is it 30/55)? ..if so is it 30 in title or cumulative?
I'm really interested in making this move if offered a position but my decision hinges on the numbers adding up properly

Not sure what union covers CA’s in that area but contract terms are basically the same state-wide. Salary will be the same throughout the state. Once one union settles their contract, OCA patterns other contracts on the same terms. The only real difference is the end date of each contract.
If you’re currently a NY state employee coming to the courts then your pension time is counted on the front end and you’ll be kept at your current tier.
CA’s are peace officers in the First and Second Departments only so any CA’s working in counties north of Orange and Dutchess are NOT peace officers.

Can you please help me with my Q too? Thanks!!!
What can I expect assigned to criminal court? There's very limited info out there about what a court assistant actually does! Thank you!
For those who got canvass letters for the city of new York, would you be able to tell me your rank. I'm lower on the list than a few of y'all so I'm curious when if ever I'll get my letter. Thanks!!!

I’m 350s on the list. I think someone mentioned being mid 400s.

Congrats and welcome to the UCS!
I didn’t reply to your question initially because I’ve never worked in criminal court and don’t have a lot to offer about it. What little I do know is this: criminal court is your best opportunity for overtime (at least downstate). I believe you said you were hired in the 8th JD? So the overtime may not be as prevalent up there.
I will say this with a modicum of certainty- as a CA in the 8th you will be exposed to more court operations than a CA downstate. The upper JD courts don’t have as much staffing as downstate courts and thus they rely on their staff to take on more duties. It’s unfair to say the least but it can also be beneficial when tests come around. You’ll be more well-rounded than the average CA and - as you’ve seen - just getting one more question right than the “other guy” can significantly increase your score/list rank.
Sorry I don’t have more for you but I believe there was another poster who said they worked in criminal. Maybe you can search this thread and contact him/her?
what is the significance of being a peace officer, as court assistants are designated downstate?
Are there additional job responsibilities associated with that designation?
Is there a difference in the pension because of the designation?
