The former Marine, possibly looking for a "hero moment", or, just a guy who happened to be in the right place at the right time, saw trouble brewing, took action, the way a Marine would, and it resulted in an unfortunate death. My question is, if the chokehold lasted 15 minutes, where were the transit police? Aren't there subway cops on these trains? The city of NY is the one liable here, not a passenger who took action to keep the situation from escalating. If NY charges the Marine, it will have a chilling effect on other riders, and no one will intercede in a dangerous situation, not wanting to get mixed up in other people's problems.

Like you said guy was trained for combat. And like my earlier post guy was trained to kill, never trained not to kill.

It's crap situation...and as stated many times. Don't get involved.
Fighting in the ring and sparring provides experience for real life scenarios. Also, a lot of martial arts principles are incorporated in hand to hand combat training.

"fighting in the ring and sparring is not the same as flailing around on a subway floor." = The video that i linked showed a black belt in a fight in a nyc subway and how he was able to subdue the perp. The perp was punching Renzo.

The marine guy didn't seem like he knew how to do the choke properly as he held it for 6 to 15 mins instead of switching to a seatbelt hold.

The choking did not last 15 minutes. This was a widely misreported number. Instead it is unknown . The actual number is disputed but significantly less. It took 15 minutes for EMS to respond.

At this point, it's already had that chilling effect. Even if the marine hadn't gotten charged, he's already been charged and tried by the media and protesters. No one wants that kind of negative attention so the best course of action is to walk away, unfortunately for the vulnerable public

Yeah occasionally there will be a guy around who can get the job done right. But how often? If I'm in a car with a threatening mentally ill man I'd settle for a guy who can get the job done -preventing the threat from escalating - even if some mistakes are made.

No one was hurt on that train. Why isn’t that celebrated ?
No one got slashed or robbed. Working people got to their destination.
No one should have to fear for themselves while someone has a mental episode on a train.

This is involuntary manslaughter. Marine dude shouldn't have kept a chokehold for that long. Even in martial arts you don't keep it that long when fighting or sparring.
How do you know how long he held the chokehold for?

That is what the media stated. Also, if you watched the video there was a man stated " you have to let him go. my wife is ex-military. you are going to kill him now!"

Another guy in the video said "once they defecate you have to let go" etc. Penny was being advised to let go by other passengers.

I recommend reading the interview of the guy who took the video.
