to the rookies... you are now considered a "2nd class" civil servant by much of the public. dont get bothered when you are yelled at, cursed at, get stuff thrown at you....... in general being berated. its an everyday occurrence out there. the public can do whatever they want to you, but if you do one thing back to them, it is 100% your fault. that is how the job looks at it. what you are being told in fbf is not what happens in the real world. its hard to explain but its things that you will pick up as the weeks and months pass by. any issues that come up during your 30 days, ask your shop steward. dont call the union. you could ask 5 union guys the same question and you would get 5 different answers. common practice in the field differ from boro to boro, district to district, and even section to section. if your shop steward is any good, they should have an answer for you. the board is another headache, that will take you a while to figure out. keep tract of what you do everyday, ask for a calendar day 1 in district. its going to be something like 26 degrees tomorrow, be prepared. being next to that water its probably going to feel like 10 degrees. if there were outdoor activities schedules hopefully someone will have a heart and postpone it for another day. sorry for a bleak outlook, but its going to be years until you make any decent wages.
