The thing is though.....there's barely any jobs in these cities. There's only like one job per city that I actually qualify for. And chances are, they won't even bother to want to interview me, especially being 300+ miles away. When I got my current job, I had applied to 177 job and only got 4 interviews and 1 offer. That was less than a year ago. I can't imagine my odds would be better in WNY, especially with all the people clamoring for jobs out there.
They also ask you for reasons why you want to relocate, and I really don't know how to answer that in a way that makes them want to interview or hire me. They tend to ask questions such as "how well do you know the area?" and "do you have any family here?" or "how long would you plan on staying here?" I know this because I had phone calls from recruiters and employers in other places such as Las Vegas, Dallas and Fort Lauderdale last year. Employers want to see a "real" reason for wanting to relocate instead of just wanting to relocate out of pure personal desire.
So, what would be your reasons for relocating to any of these cities?

Mainly to be in a more remote location with a more laid back lifestyle and change of scenery. Of course, those reasons are unacceptable to an employer, since they're superficial.

That's it? You're not going to know unless you try. That will be up to you though.

Well, all those reasons and I would like to live in an area where people aren't so concerned about money and material as much. I prefer middle class areas instead of super wealthy areas.
Well, about a year ago I applied to one or two jobs in Rochester and of course didn't hear back.

Keep trying, if you want to make that move. You only need 1 Yes. Perhaps ask questions about a position or other aspects of the company too.
I posted once about there being maybe 2 jobs in the whole Upstate region in my field. This, of course, made it impossible to make a move there. I was quickly criticized as a hater of NY (the state I was born and raised in).

Of course, nep321, that means you hate NY too!
Lol. I was also born in NY....Plattsburgh, to be exact. But we moved back to Hartford, CT after I was 6 months old. My parents just didn't think it was a great environment to raise kids. We lived in Churubusco, to be exact. VERY rural.
I don't hate NY though! Not a fan of NYC, however.
OK, I just have to chime in. My friend owns unimproved land on one of those seasonal farm roads in Churubusco, and we use it for primitive camping every year. We all live in towns and relish our father/son campouts each year up in the middle of nowhere. I find nothing wrong and everything right with the 'ruralness' of beautiful Churubusco!!!

Nope, didn't criticize anyone. I actually was encouraging him. Stop trying so hard, man. If he moves on, he moves on.

The job situation seems extremely difficult or nearly impossible in any of those cities for someone in my field. One job posting isn't enough assurance that I'll get the job. There needs to be at least a few jobs available, due to competition against local candidates who have the upper hand. I might as well forget about the idea of relocating there altogether.
