your job status
your relationship status
your financial status
should never ever ever be mentioned on Facebook.
Financial status I can agree with. But if any of my friends get engaged or married, I would hope they would post about it. And it seems to me that posting about job status is a perfect example of what social networking is good for. If I get laid off tomorrow, I can post to 300 people I know personally that I'm looking for work. One of those people may know of a job that is a perfect fit for me, that I otherwise might not have known about. Further, they may be in a position to put in a good word for me.

Seems like it would be better for me to inbox a friend privately than to have all my personal business out there. I would not want all my FB friends to know I am unemployed which is info only for my closest friends and family.

Nope. I strongly disagree. I want all my friends and family to know that I'm looking for work. I'm not too proud to seek help looking for work. There's really no reason for keeping it private.
