Its not about "equal rights." Marriage just does not apply to people of the same sex. Now should gay people be able to have some legal benefits granted to their partners? Sure, I can agree with that.
That's "mighty white" of ya GP!!!

Why has gay marriage only become a hot-button issue over the past few years or so? Its not like gay people are some kind of new invention, people have been gay since probably the beginning of time, and it seems that the idea of gay couples marrying never even came up. What brought this obsession with getting married out all of a sudden?

Christianity says that homosexuality is wrong and doesn't endorse it in any way. It comes down to loving people, not about what they do. They say love the sinner, hate the sin. George, I can like you as a human, but I don't have to accept your sexual preference. Just like you don't have to accept certain things that I like.

I've been wondering the same thing myself. You didn't hear about this 20 years ago that gays wanted to marry. What gives?

It's not the "obsession" of "marriage", it's the demand of equal legal rights for gay couples as straight couples, whether it's called "marriage", "civil union", "partnership" or whatever.

All taxpayers who are "coupled", whether they be church married or civil married (which would be the "gay-version" I would think...) should be entitled to the same legal benefits. Until this occurs, gay couples are NOT EQUAL under the law! Period.

Our country was formed upon "separation of church & state", but it's the religions that are roadblocking the civil laws in this issue. Yeah...separation...

So it's not really the idea of gay marriage that you're opposed to, it's the use of the word "marriage" to describe it.

That's incredibly weak. And a lot stupid.

Marriage is a *legal* union. That is it.

Ed, you're basing your views of secular (legal/government/laws) on religion & that's what is the hole in your argument. Gay "marriage" is NOT ruled by Christianity. Marriage is NOT a "solely Christian" tenet. Marriage occurs in every country in the world with almost as many belief systems.

To have your religious views govern the rights of gay couples to enjoy the same LEGAL rights as straight couples (notice...nothing to do with any religion...), is as bad as if Islamics took over the USA & forced you to conform to their laws that are governed by their beliefs.

Something tells me that you wouldn't be too happy in that situation either...

Because FINALLY gays are aloud to be out in society. As such they want equal rights.

That's like asking why, in the sixities, did people "all of the sudden" want interracial marriage to be made legal. It wasn't all of the sudden but the tide of society was thankfully changing allowing them to finally be heard.

Not everyone is Christian. We do not live in a theocracy. You can believe gays are going to hell. You cannot make laws based on your religious beliefs.
