I am going to be an engineering intern (21 years old) at a plant in Gary, Indiana. I was hoping to find a place close enough to commute to Gary (15-30) minutes. I want to be in a safe area, and if possible, I would like to be close enough to visit Chicago on the weekends. I just want a small apartment for around $500/month. Any ideas?

If you're going to be working downtown, Hobart would be a good start. Chesterton or Portage in Porter County would be a decent commute via the Interstate. Also, it would be easy enough to get to Chicago on the weekends.

Default What about safety?

Are these areas safe? I was also wondering about transportation such as trains or something to take me into Chicago? I have heard rumors of this.

The South Shore can get you into Chicago. You can catch that at the Chesterton or Portage stations. Both towns are safe.

I'm going to be interning in Gary as well this summer. I have come to the conclusion that: Hobart, Crown Point, Munster, Highland, Schererville, and Valparaiso are all good places to live in to commute to Gary.

I began hunting for a place about a week ago, but not many places will do a 3 month lease.

It's going to be pretty tough to find an apartment in a "safe area" of NWI for $500. It's either going to be really run-down or really small. I know you said "a small apartment", but unless you mean a single room, you're going to have to spend more like $600-800 for a small apartment in any of the areas people are listing here.

Personally I would live in one of the safer neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago (Hyde Park, Bridgeport, Pilsen, etc.), especially if I were a 21-year-old single person. You'll still be able to get to Gary in 30 minutes, but you'll have to pay more than $500 there, too, unless you get a roommate.

Crown Point, Munster, Schererville & Valpo are all going to be too expensive for him.

But $ 500 a month really isn't going to cut it either.

You could go to Whiting & probably find something economical there. Plus it would be an easy commute to Gary & you can still take the South Shore to Chicago on the weekends.
