Okay, here is what I am trying to figure out. As a retired military guy, I can stay at the Hale Koa for about $106.00 a night and be in the mix of things. I am planning on at least twenty five days which equates out to be about $2,500.00. I know all about VBRO and some of the other sites, not all but a few.
My question is this, should I stay at the Hale Koa which I think has free parking, or somewhere else? Hopefully a few of you military guys can chime in here. Heck, even White Viper or Open D can help out...lol.
I am thinking about the month of September because the Hale Koa has a lot of openings then, plus, I have a better chance at catching a free hop on space "A". All the kids should be back in school by that time too. Also, whats the best deal for a rental car with?
Any thoughts or other suggestions would be appreciated.
Okay, first off I'm very jealous of your extended stay plans. 25 days sounds like heaven!
With your room at the Hale Koa, will it have a mini kitchen? Will you have access to laundry facilities 24/7? If not, renting a condo may be a better way to go. I haven't looked at any prices, but with such an extended stay, being able to cook your own meals, store your own food and do your own laundry will be pretty important. If the Hale Koa offers all this at the price of $109 I'm not sure you can really beat that though. Sure you're in Waikiki but with a car you can be anywhere you want to be.
As retired military you can also rent a cabin at Bellows AFB and live on the beach for part of your stay. That's the best beach on the island IMHO
Thanks for the reply, I have hear a lot of bad things about Bellows, their reviews are bad for pest etc. Hale Koa at $106.00 a night including all taxes etc. does have several restraunts, parking, and a small fridge in the room. Plus they are right on the beach and their rate would cost me probably about two fifty or better a night plus taxes for a comparable civilian place.
Looking forward to going back, haven't been back there in over forty years.

$106/night is an easy decision - the location can't be beat right on the beach.
Rental Cars - probably the Hale Koa concierge can hook you up with a military discount - just don't get a car at the airport, you'd pay a lot more in taxes and fees.
I would go with Hale Koa too. Wow im even excited for you too lol, the 70s was the last time you were there? Yes? Well direct message me if you want a list of places still there that you might remember or anything else i can be helpful with. Aloha
For cars, I use and recommend discounthawaiicarrental.com (not affiliated, just a happy repeat customer). They are essentially a consolidator that helps the national companies sell their inventory. You select a type of car and whatever options you want (or just click "Lowest Economy/Compact Rate like I do), enter your dates and info, and they'll email you a regular reservation with a national company, cheaper than whatever you can get from the company itself. It's not a prepaid rental, no payment needed, just a regular reservation that you can cancel anytime if you find something cheaper. It always includes the extra driver in my experience. I have heard of people finding better deals at places like Costco.com (must be a member) and other random promotions, so it can be worthwhile to look around still. But usually I hear how people saved money when they found this.
You might want to check on the parking at the Hale Koa. The FAQ is from last year, but makes me think it would be $7/day.
Yes, parking is available in the hotel's parking garage located across the street from the hotel. Additional parking is available in our Saratoga parking lot. Parking is $7 daily (price valid through September 2013) for hotel guests. Automatic payment facility pay stations located in hotel lobbies, ground floor garage and Saratoga parking lot. Bring parking ticket to hotel restaurants, banquet functions, bell desk or Ilima Swimming Pool for validation. Hale Koa parking shuttle operates upon request. Please inquire at bell desk or call (808) 955-0555 for assistance. Hale Koa Hotel - FAQ
Thanks guys for the responce. After I posted last night I found out that they do charge a $7.00 parking fee. Was told that anywhere else it could be up to $25.00 a day for parking.
Also, found out today when I called them, that I could even get a room for as low as $99.00 a night. Got to save where I can. I was last there in the mid sixties. That was a long time ago, looking into whether or not we want to move there part time or full time.
Thinking about hitting one of the other islands too. Spent some time on BI thanks to uncle sam.
That's the resort life, for sure. Convenient MWR equipment rental (gotta try the stand-up paddle boarding) and nice pool with hot tub for guests. (day visitors are stuck with the kiddie pool) Sounds like an amazing way to go! The kids being back in school isn't going to help traffic but hopefully you'll sleep in and miss the morning commute.
I love Bellows beach but have never stayed at the cabins there. I love the beach. The sand is wonderful there and the surf is gentle. I hope you get over there. Also nice equipment rentals - kayaks!
Hale Koa, can't beat the area Waikiki. Glad your thinking about September. Rim Pac is getting ready to start end of june into August. There will be 23 Nations, Rim of the Pacific Navy ships in and out of port at that time.
Waikiki has changed in forty years. No more International Market Place. This year started Re-modeling and building a new hotel in the area. The company doing the job are going to keep the Banyan trees and build the hotel around them.
Make reservations as soon as you can at the Hale Koa.
Best of luck
