Omaha is not an origin for ANY style of music. Bright Eyes was the biggest act to come out of here, but the music was nothing more than a trendy fad.

New Orleans jazz is timeless and when you hear it, you think New Orleans when you hear it.

People who live in Florida or Georgia who hear Cursive, do not think of Omaha when they hear the music. Omaha is plain Jane no matter how much you spin it.

I am talking about people turning left well after the light has turned. I am used to waiting for at least 2-3 cars to turn after my light has turned green.

I wasn't saying it was awesome. I was just pointing out what's here...

Besides how many cities can claim they invented or innovated any kind of music? Not many, a small handful.

Bugha, I think you pretty clearly have some personal animosity toward the city that is clouding your criticisms. I will submit that the city has several cultural shortcomings, but the music scene is not one of them. Also, as a fan of jazz music, I would encourage you to be a bit more open minded about music. Afterall, what do you think people said about jazz when it was new? If you read a book on the history of jazz and then come back and read your comments I think you will recognize the irony in your singling out a new genre of music as a "trendy fad" and then going on to praise jazz.

So you are trying to convince me that "The Saddle Creek scene" will become this influential style of music for decades to come? I'm not saying that Omaha does not have talent when it comes to music. But Omaha does not have a style of music to call it's own. Bright Eyes, Faint, etc...etc..are from here but the music is not original.

So does this mean that it is not culture? And to say that a certain city has a claim to a certain style of music is a pretty far fetched claim. Kansas City and Chicago both have their own styles of jazz as well. Perhaps if you were to say that the New Orleans style of jazz introduced certain elements that became more prevalent in the broader scope of jazz I would buy it. You can not unequivocally say that Jazz arose in a certain place. It borrowed heavily from the slave songs of the time as well as african rhythms amongst many other styles of music, so to even say that it is original can be debated. My point being is that no one place can claim to have to have birthed an artistic movement. Culture does not just appear, it's an ever changing and morphing thing detailed with the soul of every person that has helped shape it. Omaha has people doing this. They are adding to the framework that all humans use for a collective expression, or culture.

I agree with 100% of what laserdisque posted. I will also refer you, Bugaha, to my earlier post stating that I am pretty certain indie rock will not have the same lasting impact that jazz has had - but I am not clairvoyant. Because music is ever evolving, acts like Daniel Johnston, which I would have never imagined being influential upon first listen, have taken on a greater significance then a person might initially suspect. My earlier post went on to state that a single town cannot lay claim to a genre of music. Omaha can't do it with indie rock, and New Orleans can't do it with jazz.

These guys beg to differ.

And like Dsrich asked, how many cities have these "signature sounds"? Only a handful. Omaha has made some major contributions to SEVERAL genres of music, including Jazz.
