I think saying no shorts all together is overkill.
I mean, not all shorts are hoochie shorts, you can find some decent sized ones, especially since "midi" is super in right now.

I've said before that we always cover our knees. Let's see, I used to live where it was routinely above 105 all summer and had no problems. In fact, covering more skin with loose clothing often makes one cooler due to the fact that the sun is not beating down on the skin.

The difference would be negligible though since you are talking about maybe 2-3 inches of material.

Why cover knees? What about them needs to be covered?
What's wrong with bermuda shorts that come to right above the knee, that way you aren't ruling out shorts all together and girls won't have just capris to wear.
4 inches is pretty long, no butt cheeks hanging out, the upper part of the thigh covered.
