Can someone please explain to me why there are designated parking spaces at various grocery and retail stores for "families with children"?? Up front and center with the handicapped spots? Last time I checked, parents are still capable of walking like everyone else. Unless that changed recently and I'm somehow unaware of it.

That's a really good idea. The shorter the distance from the car to the door, the less likely a small child will step in front of a car backing up. You can't see a small child in your rear view mirror and they can take off in a split second.

It is a good idea. It is funny, now that I have kids I park way different than before, which I wouldn't have expected.
For example, besides parking closer to the door in a normal lot, I may park farther away from my destination if they have parking spots near a sidewalk so I don't need to walk through the parking lot.
I have three smaller kids, I do find it stressful walking through parking lots.

This isn't anything new. A few stores by me have had them for years.
I think it's a good idea --- if you have small children, you would understand. It's not for the parents but for the safety of the children.
I think it is stupid. If you cannot get your small child from the parking lot into the store without them getting hit by a car, you should not have children. The trend to make things so much easier for parents and children is going to do nothing but raise a generation of wimps.
Because anything that decreases the distance small, unpredictable children -- without the cognitaivate ability to asses possibly dangerous situations -- have to walk across an area where vehicles cannot physically see them is wise.
Pedestrian injury is still the second leading cause of injury-related death in the country for children ages 5 to 14. Of Non-traffic pediatric fatalities, children aged <15, 34% of those fatalities are backovers, 30% are frontovers, a majority occurring in parking lots or driveways.Backovers
Children are particularly vulnerable to pedestrian injuries because they are exposed to traffic threats that exceed
their cognitive, developmental, behavioral, physical, and sensory abilities. This is exacerbated by the fact that
parents often overestimate their children’s pedestrian skills. Children are impulsive and have not yet developed
the skills to judge how far away a car is and how quickly it is approaching. Usually, these skills develop
gradually and are not fully mastered until at least age 10. http://www.safekids.org/assets/docs/...y-research.pdf
Had them for ages in the UK and I've seen them in the bigger carparks here in Finland. They're very useful as they are usually wider than normal spaces which helps a lot with getting babies/toddlers out of carseats or taking out an infant carseat.
I guess I just don't understand the concept of not being able to get your child from your car to the store without having them get struck by a car. In that case there should be parents with pets spots as well.
