I am DEVASTADED when summer ends. I am a teacher and I DREAD going back to school! It's a daunting task to manage work, school activities/homework/projects and afterschool/weekend activities.

Why the stress from parents about homework? It's the kids responsibility, we parents just check it over, right? Help a little here and there but nothing major. While my kids are doing their homework after school lets out, I'm usually starting dinner and in the kitchen, anyway, and they sit near me at the table or the breakfast nook area and do their homework... it's not a big deal. Every teacher we've ever had over the years have all said that if they begin to get frustrated with something they bring home for homework - tell them to stop... write a note on the homework letting the teacher know, and that's the end of it. If they are upset, they are not effectively learning. If the kids are needing too much help at home with homework, or are becoming too frustrated from it, the teacher needs to know so that they can be given more instruction in class on the subject. Homework shouldn't be a stressful time for the kids or the parents. It should just be practice and reinforcement for the kids and a sort of liaison or message between teacher and parent letting the parent know what their child is doing in school.

Just curious...

I probably could have slept late all summer long if ... IF... we didn't have CATS! lol Oh my gosh... it's like they're going to starve to death or something if I'm not up by 7am pouring food into their bowl. (We have to put all food up and away at night, otherwise, we have an army of ants to fight in the morning... and our vet has said both our cats are too fat, so it would do them a bit of good, anyway!)

I'm surprised your sweet puppy lets you sleep in! What a good pup!

Most of the time, my kids have a pretty good grasp of the subject matter from school and can do the homework on their own. I'll check it over, and have them correct any mistakes if needed.

But on occasion an assignment will come home that they are just a bit shaky on. I'll sit down with them and we'll go over the lesson until they grasp it. My kids are pretty young, so none of this takes a great deal of time and it never involves anger or tears (on their part or my part).

In addition, we practice their handwriting and I make sure they do their reading every night.

It isn't a big deal, really. But it is kind of nice to have a break from homework over the summer, even though we still do some practice to keep their skills up.

Once my kids became teens....I counted the DAYS for their return to school and couldn't wait!!! It was worth getting up early, helping with homework, getting clothes ready, cooking breakfast, making lunches.....ANYTHING for them to be gone a few hours a day!!!

This was me after they went out the door......................

I didn't know that teachers got the entire Summer off? I have several friends who are teachers (teaching since "89") and I have never seen them take an entire Summer off. They tutor, teach Summer school, help write curriculums,etc... so,they still juggle the daycare,daycame,soccer,etc... throughout the entire year.
I was just surprised at the number of posts regarding teachers being sad to see the Summer end.

As for me, I sometimes want it to end and other times, not so much.
I am a pretty scheduled person,so I do better when there is a schedule to follow and things to do.

It sounds like all of the mothers in here are stay at home moms? I've been working full time since 1983 so all I can say is that I'm jealous! There is structure 12 months a year. 20-25 more years of this and then hopefully I can retire :-)

What does this have to do with anything?

I am always ready when school starts. And honestly, my kids are too. DD leaves for college in a few days and DS goes back to high school. It will get both more and less hectic. No sharing the car with DD and trying to get DS places during the day that are too far for him to ride his bike or walk to. But spending a small fortune on school supplies and trying to help DS get and stay organized and on top of things from the get-go can be a challenge. I am happy when they go back and happy when they get out again!
