SEPTA to begin all-night subway service this month
This is awesome, although this part strikes me as a bit weird:

"At unstaffed stations, riders will pay train operators before boarding. Riders will need exact cash, a token or a pass, as the operators will not give out change. The operators will sell transfers, SEPTA said."

Does this mean the driver leans out of the train cab window, and everyone walks by and hands him a fare before he drives off? Or does the train have a "conductor"?
Do they just open one door on the train at a time, and everyone walks in and out of it?

I'm not exactly sure but if there are multiple train operators than I guess it could be similar to what the train operators do on the regional rail lines.

Yeah, just seems like it would be harder to regulate in a subway situation, where stops are frequent, and all the doors open and people hop on and off. They don't really give any specifics in that article though, obviously. Maybe the trains they're going to run late night will only have a couple of cars?

I guess we'll have to wait and find out. I am glad though city is offering 24/hr subway service on all of its lines on the weekend. It definitely gives Philly an edge over many other cities in the world when it comes to late night transportation service. I know a lot of people like to bash Philly's subway system but it still one of the best in the country.

Absolutely. If Philly can pull-off permanent 24-hour subway service before Boston, DC and SF, that would be quite a feather in the city's cap. Let's cross our fingers for success!

The subway-trolleys and PATCO already run 24-hour service, so I guess Philly is already halfway there. They just need to get permanent 24-hour subway service on the MFL and BSL and it will be complete.

I've been wondering too - perhaps they'll run the Ridge-Spur two cars sets on the BSL. It's the only way that could work. Will become a non-issue with new payment technology.

First off, folks, this is a restoration of service that had been discontinued, not a new initiative. Philadelphia had round-the-clock subway-elevated service, just as in NYC and Chicago, until 1991. The decision to replace overnight trains with buses was made for safety and cost reasons.

Second, take a look at the pictures in my blog post on the announcement (the blog server's down again as I write this, but it will come back up) for how the on-board payment will work. There will be signs in the stations indicating where riders should wait; the operator's cab will stop at that point and riders will give their fares or show their passes to the operator.

Third, the BSL will operate with three-car trains (the Kawasaki B-IV fleet includes some single cars) and the MFL with four-car trains (the ADtrans M-4s are all married pairs).

I heard that the wendys at 15th and chestnut is going to move and the building above it is being renovated for residents from my new building's doorman. He said the wendys was going to be replaced by something like a bank or law office etc. He said some of the other pizza shops etc are going to move too.
