This would be a joke -- IF it weren't affecting people's jobs and livlihoods.

Now the city thinks people are stupid and going to fall for their NEW PR campaign about the "Pope Festival Grounds." Did the PRE woman say there's no more "Box"...but a moving perimeter?

I looked at her SMUG face and was yelling at the TV. This is no joke lady. People don't knwo how they'll get to WORK!! You know JOBS....

And there's the new campaign called, "I'll be There" to encourage people not to leave the city.
TOO LATE.....WAAAAY too late.

THIS is what happens when you get a major who can't run for re-election.

I see they're paving 52nd street. Is the pope even going to be there.
The joke is, "Oh, the pope is coming ...NOW you can paving the street."

I heard someone say they still haven't heard exactly how mail is going to be delivered those days.

I don't think the agency cooperation is as "nice" as we're hearing.

Glad I won't anywhere near any of it.

I hear you.
We all share your frustration.
Most of us, who got a chance, will actually GTFO from Center City. I will personally go back to Miami that weekend.
Like what you said, alot of people got scared already and plan to either leave or stay indoor after stocking up for food.
I also asked my favorite place to eat down on Sansom, and they said they are closing during that weekend.
This is a clusterf*ck at epic proportion.
I just feel bad for those who cannot leave the city.

But again at the end of the day, we do not know what will happen during the event.
Maybe there is benefit we can reap from this.

The pope is going to be in NYC for two days before his two days in Philly (also in DC the day before that), and as far as I know there isn't going to be a significant disruption to the city.
I honestly don't get why they're taking so many ridiculous precautions in Philly.

I have not seen any this because I don't watch TV for any kind of "information". However regarding paving 52nd St there has been major infrastructure work being done in the area for a while now: new water mains and sidewalks and now this paving job. It was probably added to needed projects a long time ago but couldn't be done because of very tight budgets and isn't specifically related to the Papal visit.

If you won't be anywhere near it I really have to ask what is the reason for this rant? Some of us will be near it and in because we don't have the resources and ability to leave.

Is it really necessary to comment AGAIN about how you are bailing? Lol Thanx for at least admitting we don't know how it will turn out. Some folks your age, though, don't seem to grasp that nothing is guaranteed in life
and you can't or shouldn't run when it gets too hard.

The secret service declared it some kind of "extra security event" probably because of the open-ish outdoor mass. Plus him coming here is in conjunction with the World Meeting of Families which has never happened I the US before. People will already be here for that.

The Papal visit to NYC is at the UN, right? It's inside. That doesn't mean something can't happen but it's probably less of a danger according to the SS.

I haven't bothered to find out where he will be in DC.

Also since the SS has had those breaches at the White House, they're probably being overly cautious.

I mean you people are acting like the city can tell Homeland Security and the SS what to do.

It strikes me that there is a lot of whining going on. I mean, the Pope is coming to Philly! Unlike his visits to NYC and DC, he's doing not one, but 3 outdoor events. Lots of logistics and safety considerations come into play - of course. I wouldn't dream of leaving town. I want to stick around and see what happens.

As for road and appearance upgrades - why whine over those? Just because the Pope won't see each improved thoroughfare doesn't mean that conference attendees and the press might pass by. Is there anyone who doesn't pick up when company comes over? Would you rather the press and our conference guests report that Philly looks to be a clean and well-maintained city or that it resembles Kosovo? And best of all: when the Pope is long gone, we'll have improved streets to drive on. What's the downside?

It's one weekend out of folk's lives. Stop hyperventilating.

Have you noticed that the people whining are the same ones leaving? Frankly, IMO, 8 years of Frank Rizzo being mayor makes this look like a cake walk.

In NYC he's addressing the UN, giving a service at ground zero, visiting catholic schools, giving mass at Madison Square Garden, and (I think) also at St Patricks's cathedral.

I'm not acting like the city can tell anyone anything. You and I both used just used the word "they" in describing who's responsible for the (IMO) ridiculousness.

That may be true, but do you know what the "box" or "festival" perimeters are? The river to 38th Street and Girard Avenue to South Street. That's all of Center City and then some. Shut down. That's just sheer stupidity!!

Good news, finally, for papal visit
