I'm acquainted with one of the Inky's editorial writers, who shares my interest in public transportation.

BTW, MPK21, I've now read Rhynhart's position statements on the major issues. If she's a socialist, then I am Marie of Romania. Maybe it's her emphasis on encouraging Black business formation and homeownership that you have a problem with? News flash: This city is plurality Black — it even has an affluent Black neighborhood in East Oak Lane. As its Black population prospers in a safer environment, so will the city as a whole prosper in a safer environment.

I'm now reading an article about my favorite bête noire, FOP Lodge 5 head John McNesby, by one of my Phillymag colleagues, and the article makes quite clear that he basically considers about 45 percent of the city little better than animals, including me. I think the article also notes that the current PPD rank and file don't really share McNesby's views, but many of the retired officers who get to vote for the FOP Lodge 5 head do.

And the Inky's endorsement editorial points out that the Rhynhart audit of the Police Department that led to the recent move to get cops out from behind desks and onto patrol got under McNesby's skin. Good for Rhynhart.
Of course former, yet claims to be an original progressive, Wall Street career gal Rhynhart's socialist home ownership policies are rooted in the marxist theory now de rigueur in the U S: ''systemic racism'' and other assorted grievances:

in part:

''But in too many neighborhoods today, that dream of owning a home or even finding an affordable rental is slipping away – today only 52% of homes are owner-occupied, down from 60% in 2009. And homeownership among Black residents fell to 47% in 2019 from a high of 55% in 1990.

then concludes this topic with:

''Racist government policies of the past, such as redlining in Philadelphia, intentionally kept Black and Brown residents from buying homes and systemic racism continues to make it more difficult for Black and Brown families to secure mortgages. Rebecca will use her platform to advocate for ending the systemic racist policies that still exist in our nation's banking policies and laws today. To right this wrong, we must be intentional and creative.''

''Mayor Rhynhart will confront the city’s lack of affordable housing on multiple fronts.''...LOL

For starters, how exactly is systemic racism and redlining responsible for decreasing a 1990 55% black Philly home ownership rate to 47% rate in 2019?

Rhynhart still proposes using America Rescue $$ and housing trust funds etc to subsidize mortgages for black residents (and the obligatory ''brown'' side mention) who otherwise can't afford to buy a house?

Rhynhart of all people should know the disasterous ramifications of free money for anything let alone for subsidizing mortgages, a socialist dream of creating increased black homeownership by subsidizing mortgages and costs to buy homes.

Rhyhart had a Wall Street career directly in the biggest mortgage, encouraging people to refinance their paid off homes for cash based on fraudulent values, subsidizing $$ give-away-no money down-mortgage fraud-free-for-all in history that ended with financial ruination, banks folding, higher than the Great Depression foreclosure and eviction rates, ending the highest home ownership rates ever in the U.S. bringing them back its regular ownership rates. How does ''an original progressive'' Rhynhart claims to be land any job on Wall Street let alone (2) that had roles in the 2008 nightmare?

Rhynhart was a managing director at Bear Stearns on the credit derivatives desk during the housing collapse of 2008. Prior to Bear, she worked on municipal debt at Fitch Rating Agency. Do those 2 outfits ring a bell? They should if you know the history of the mortgage fraud induced 2008 Depression and Bear Stearns/Fitch's direct role in it. All those fraudulent Commercial Backed Mortgage Securities sold around the world that would end in the financial calamity and access to credit markets frozen. Bear Stearns created shoddy high-risk mortgage securities and had outfits like Fitch fraudulently rate them as A+ low risk investments. Makes sense that Rhynhart could seamlessly move from the fraudulent rating firm to the investment banking firm feeding the fraudulent securities; more $$ to make at BearStearns.,,then it collapses and brings the world economy to its knees.

And now she's selling and pandering this same socialist nightmare theory of subsidizing mortgages to black folks and endorsed by the Inquirer...lol...you can't make this stuff up. Of course black ownership went down and equity went out in Philly post-1990, Rhynhart knows the biggest culprit in it. There are homes across the country still underwater from the biggest home equity and asset wipe out. Lots of black folks lost existing equity in property values even if they weren't involved in this Rhynhart mess.

Rhynhart lost her job in the 2008 Bear Stearns collapse but was able to land the Treasurer job in the Nutter Administration, and is credited with ''playing a pivitol role in Philly's economic recovery from the Great Recession''...lol...that she was directly involved in creating and benefiting from $$ while working on Wall Steet for the 2 of the biggest fraudsters in history. Does the Inquirer endorsement mention her pivotol role in the Wall Street induced 2008 Depression?

I can't even read anymore of her housing crisis and eviction ''solutions.'' Now she's a solutions leader on housing and evictions given her role in creating the 2006-2013 housing depression and eviction crisis putting millions of people and families on the streets. Please. The housing collapse exacerbated and extended with, you guessed it, more housing subsidies by the Obama Administration: let's give a $7,500 income tax return credit to 1st time home buyers...2006-2009 housing values in free fall...Obama Socialist Tax Credit $$ Give Away Program 2009-2010 housing values stagnate...free $$ program ends...2010-2013 housing values in free fall again...buyers using Obama's tax credit handouts losing equity and value for the next 3 years. Enough with the free $$ to buy homes.

I don't see any mention of her Wall Street career at all in her ''me for mayor'' web site. Hard to believe right? There is this vague reference though about her fight for the people with, of course, a focus on the marxist-socialist equity, fairness, and social justice cliches:

''She used her financial expertise to expose wasteful spending and make government work more effectively with an emphasis on equity, fairness and social justice. She has shown courage in refusing to back down from tough fights in order to serve Philadelphia. And she bolstered her government expertise with executive management and private sector experience, bringing a fresh perspective and thoughtful, common-sense solutions to the city.''

Financial expertise? She worked at a Wall Street firm that collapses and closed down. People buy into this hypocritical garbage though. She'll be the next mayor lol.

Actually, a 1990 55% black home ownership decline to 47% in 2019 (I bet it was earlier than that year) isn't all that bad given the economic calamity Rhynhart was an active participant in creating and made $$ on thru 2008.

As to the 2019 McNesby article...stating ''facing rabid animals'' refers to the entire black community? Maybe he should have just used HRC-Biden coined description ''super predators''. Does the super predator translate to the entire black community or is it dependent on who says it?

Here's my point about the use of the word "socialist":

Socialism refers to an economic system where the state, acting in the name of the workers, owns the productive enterprises. Now, we can and do differ on the proper role of the state in promoting equality and the rights of workers, but absent that, no socialism, even if (as in Sweden) you have a system of generous social welfare benefits paid for by high taxes, especially on the most affluent.

I will grant that there's some confusion about this because those who advocate such systems (which, ironically, also require capitalist market economies to work, as libertarian conservative humorist P.J. O'Rourke so wryly noted) call themselves "social democrats" while others who support them as a way station on the road to socialism call themselves "democratic socialists." But there's still a difference between social welfare and socialism.

You make valid criticisms of Rhynhart's role in inflating the housing bubble that led to the 2008 Great Recession. I also remember reading about "NINJA loans" ("no income, job or assets") and wondering whether I could get some of whatever it was those lenders were smoking. I don't think I could dismiss your argument that the fall in Black homeownership post-2019 is in part (or even largely) due to a bunch of people who never should have gotten mortgages in the first place getting them, but I'm still okay with subsidies to assist those buying a property for the first time and keeping their houses in decent working order. Both will repay society in the long run by promoting ownership and stability and allowing those (not necessarily Black, but quite likely disproportionately so) homeowners a chance to build generational wealth.

This 100%. Conservatives have been trained to throw around words like "socialist", "Marxist", and "communism" as boogeyman threats without even the first clue what they actually mean. It just makes people who do that look ignorant.

Your fellow travelers (there's an old lefty phrase for you) on the Right, who conflate the first and last of those three terms.

Granted, Marx himself considered socialism the first step on the road to communism, and as we have seen, under communism (or actually, undemocratic socialism), the state did not wither away but rather became more all-encompassing.

But there are such things as "democratic socialists," which is to say, socialists that willingly accept losing elections (unlike a certain recent occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW). The British, French and Italians have all put socialist governments in power only to vote them out several years later. The American Right likes to pretend that these creatures are purely mythical. One of those European conservatives Ronald Reagan admired, Britain's Margaret Thatcher, could advise the Americans to the contrary, having successfully dismantled most of the "lemon socialist" enterprise the British Labor Party had built over much of the 30-odd years preceding her.

Lol. I think we all know the answer to this. I actually agree with much of what this dude states (minus obvious blatantly racist comments - eg “wutang virus”), but can you imagine being so generally disgruntled with life that you go to blogs where you don’t even live and spout hatred and judge people who actually have vested interest in said region? That’s a rough way to live the one life you have. I can’t even imagine that level of unhappiness. Really sad honestly. I hope he finds true joy in something.
