What was Upton's? Any relationship with Russ Upton, of KTVK in the 60s? He was our across-the-alley neighbor.

Also, can anyone date that pic?

Photo is dated Jan, 1977. Upton's was a restaurant that made ice cream in the back of their 7th Street place near Garfield. They had several smaller places around Phoenix. They date from the 40's.
Here is another shot taken from the Regency House. Actually, I have several shots like a panorama.

We used to go to a La Casitas restaurant but It was at Central and Buckeye (Henshaw years ago). If I remember correctly the building was a Richfield gas station before the restaurant. When they went out of business there was a sale and we went there hoping to buy the beautiful neon 'La Casita" sign attached to the building. No one wanted it and we could have had it for $5 but it had to be taken down in a couple of days. We were going to an antique show we signed up for in Los Angeles so did not buy it. I suppose it was destroyed when the building was demolished.

May I introduce Miss Chili Pepper 1948. This is in Phoenix but I don't know what the building is in the background. Pretty daring for the late 40's.

I think that there is a person on a horse to the right of the Miss Chili Pepper-cactus complex, on the level of the face of the girl. I am thinking that the mountain in the background is Camelback, seen from the northwest. This suggests the possibility that the photograph was taken at a resort or a dude ranch. This is compatible with the attire of the girl which is indeed scant for the 1940s.

The shadows suggest a mid-afternoon photo shoot, and if so, then if the mountain is Camelback, the camera is looking to the northeast, and the site would be southwest, maybe around 24th or 32nd streets and Washington or VB? My other thought is the time is late morning, looking northwest, so the location would be southeast, maybe McDowell or McKellips at Pima or Longmore? Again, assuming the mountain is Camelback... The structure looks like planks or railroad ties and has what looks like wagon wheels at the base (by the rider).

Today, her attire would be tame at Miami's South Beach or Mardis Gras in New Orleans, but back then... scandalous!

Happy 65th anniversary to Pete's Fish and Chips!! Pete opened his first one on March 23 1947.
Probably not too many long time residents never eaten there at least once.
Story and pics in the east valley Tribune.

Thanks for the memory! Late 70s, some friends and I were going to go to The Tee Pee, but it was closed due to a monsoon power outage. One guy suggested Pete's only a block or two away on 44th, their electricity was on. The menu was perfect for a college student. Scallops and chips, awesome. Reminded me of a fish version of the Ranch House in Scottsdale.

Yes, there was one in So. Phoenix on Central. I think the east/west street was Jones. It was just up the street from the school I went to. Didn't know Frenchy's.
