This is primarily due to the gambling, and the commissioners simply do not want gambling to mix with sports. Also, there likely wouldn't be enough support for pro sports in Vegas due to much of the revenue is from casinos and entertainment. Most tourists want to go to Vegas to gamble, cut loose, and have a good time ... not see a ball game.

I think both Phoenix and Vegas have reasons to be envious of one another. Where do a large number of Vegas visitors come from? Arizona & California. Phoenix might wish for the glitz, nightlife, tourism, and 24/7 activity that Vegas has. Vegas might wish for the pro sports teams, better corporate jobs, nicer suburbs, and a more real city type of atmosphere that Phoenix has.
I would 0pretty much agree. Phoenix for sports (though I think Vegas will eventually crack that barricade} and Tech style jobs.

Suburbs? Actually Las Vegas does not have any significant suburbs but it has master plans and tracts which are equal or superior to any in the Valley of the Sun. While it has multiple municipalities they are all contiguous and impossible to tell apart.

I'm with you on this.

My impression is a few posters here think Las Vegas has more in common with southern CA/LA than Phoenix has but besides some minor things in common with southern CA as you say, I think both Phoenix and Las Vegas each have their own uniqueness/feel.

My guess is a part of this is the many people who leave CA want to leave behind many of the things they don't find desirable in CA, not seek them out in other cities like Phoenix. And that to me is a good thing.

In short:

Phoenix is a much bigger city population and size wise. It resembles parts of the LA area. As stated, it stays hotter longer and its hotter in general and the allergy season is also longer.

Had a cousin move out of Phoenix due to the allergies.

I think it would be easier to get bored in Phoenix vs Las Vegas although nobody can say Phoenix is not lively.

The shows and food on the LV strip are world class and updated often.

LV is a better location geographically for outdoor activities. Its actually rated #1 in the US because in a radius of some 300 miles you have some of the best stuff on earth like Zion, Grand Canyon, Bryce and Death Valley!

Even you live in LV you don't have do the strip or the gambling.

Traffic is less in Las Vegas minus the strip.

Phoenix is greener and the urban planners have done a better job of developing this new city.

Good thread that makes me want to visit LV again in a less hurried manner, and see for myself.

What I should do is start a Phoenix-Albuquerque comparison thread, as I thought those two were a little closer than LV-Phoenix.

Albuquerque is more comparable with Tucson while Phoenix is more comparable to Vegas

that would be good too as ABQ and Santa Fe are also potential places (and beautiful) personally I find the NM climates much more tolerable and livable than anywhere in NV or AZ, its more close to 'home' for me.

I am just not sure I'm ready for such a jump from CA, for me, moving to NM would be a bigger commitment I'm not sure if I'm ready for right now since I am still looking for more of a temporary landing place from which to start my 'long term' home search. that said its important to me to at least like the temporary place enough to live there a year and not be miserable!

I'm also considering flagstaff.

I did visit Scottsdale yesterday and got to walk the downtown and I did enjoy it and I liked it a lot.

This has kinda been bugging me...ok, we all hear about the amazingly beautiful women that seem to for some reason congregate in Scottsdale (I was mildly relieved last night to find mostly normal looking people)

I know Bruce Jackpot is all about the ladies of Scottsdale.

But, look I'm about to be 38. I'm a reasonably attractive woman myself, but why on earth would I want to surround myself with the most beautiful people in the country, especially women who might be younger and work out constantly? I mean...is that really a selling point? lol it seems like as a single woman I might prefer to be by the uglies right?

It's tempting to be there, but I walked away from living there in part due to the above. Whether it's looks, the cars, the toys..it can be too much. Good and bad.

interesting, I'd like to hear more about that. Maybe its nice if you are a rich old guy, but why would a woman in her 30's and 40's want to be dealing with that if looking for a serious relationship? I'm just not sure cause I lived in SoCal and didn't notice it so much, in fact I think I Actually saw more overweight people in PHX as a whole but I did notice the fancy cars in Scottsdale, I have a nice car but it was kind of annoying lol, and again I lived in Carlsbad and San Diego where everyone drives nice cars. Honestly I saw mostly normal looking people in Scottsdale and an occasional ridiculous looking 'fake' look...which I don't find appealing so would not want to emulate that.

I guess it might be inspirational in terms of wanting to get to the gym more often, of course that's one of the things I love about socal...not having to go to the gym! I'd just go outsde

Just like people here talk about Scottsdale and PV as paradise on earth, and they are not. They are nice, but no paradise.

The Las Vegas strip looks and feels like a small chunk of Manhattan in the middle of the desert.

Other than that and all the 24-7 activity I never thought it seemed like a true big city, more like a big funpark and very superficial.

There's not much in the way of culture, museums, zoos, good jobs, or higher education.

But the scenery, climate, and the newness are very similar to Phoenix.
