Kind of curious why most of the HOA associations don’t have pools...

Better to find a house with a pool than to build one. The cost of the pool is almost never reflected in the appraised value of the home.

I have a pool, the cost of ownership is not terribly high. I do all my pool maintenance and upkeep myself. In the summer it is great to have the option of being outside.

If you have a pool do not ever go to pool stores for chemical testing. Go to troublefreepools.com and learn about pool upkeep. It will save you a literal fortune. Pool stores are in business to separate you from you wallet.

Edit: if you have kids put a fence up around the pool and get them swim lessons!!! An unprotected pool is more dangerous than having loaded weapons lying around your yard unattended.

Where are you getting this statistic? My HOA has pools and most around me do too.

Do you say ATM machine and VIN number as well?

I don’t think that supports the declaration that most HOAs don’t have pools. Many do.

It depends on the hood you are looking at, the time frame, and how much you spend. Years ago, you would get a fraction of the cost out. But now, it scales in some areas. In the areas we are looking at, a decent pool has about a $30K-$40K premium. I suspect they are $50K pools new today.

In our current home if we had a pool, it would fetch an additional $30K. That's cheaper than buying a new one. But back in 2005 when the past owner built, that's about what they cost.

We agree, the number 1 reason that I want a pool is eye candy. I don't think you can have an amazing looking backyard without one. But with the maintenance and the fact that we are gone over the summer, I'd personally punt. But my wife demands a pool in the next house.

We build an amazing pool and backyard in the neighborhood where our kids grew up in MN. In today's dollars, it would be a $100K plus (double roman, with killer landscaping and lighting). I swam in the pool maybe once a year. But I looked at it 100 times a day. Much like living on lake. It adds value to the look and feel. To me, a nice pool is jewelry with added maintenance and expense.

Can one get the Arizona pool lifestyle in a condo setting?
Our HOA has a pool. People in our community complain on Facebook that it is too busy in the summer, neighborhood kids are using it etc etc. Some people get all lathered up about the pool. For me personally, I don't want to swim in a community pool if there are a bunch of kids around. Both from some kids peeing in the pool and people crammed into the same close quarters and hearing them scream, swear, etc. So for us, we don't use the community pool. Since it is packed, it seems that others disagree. I suppose if I was a kid, the more kids around me the merrier.

A pool is gold in AZ. Contract a pool service if you can and enjoy! Pools in AZ are smaller than I was used to in MI. I don't mind though. Just need enough room to float!
