Tearing out that stupid fence was one of the very first things we did. Made a huge difference.

Did you do this yourself or did you hire someone to do it? I hate my pool fence. It has 2 gates that are a pain so I prop them open.

Hired someone. My wife probably still has the info. I think it was maybe $200 or so to cut it out below-grade, and haul it all away.

I didn't put in a pool fence at all, just had to make sure all doors to the exterior were self closing with high handles. I removed the self closing feature on our 12-foot wall of glass that opens up after the inspector left but left the high handles. My kids can swim like fish though.

Did the same thing and removed the latch 10 min after the inspector left. The installer for the self closing system actually apologized and left a tool and showed us how to remove the system and said its pretty much the norm to remove it after an inspection...... said older owners can barely operate the system because it takes 2 hands and a lot of effort to now open the door. We failed our inspection the 1st visit because we had a 3" gap under the gate to the backyard and was told it can only be 2" I challenged the inspector to find me a child that could crawl under a 3" opening in a fence and he just gave me a silly look.

There are lot of exceptions to the pool fence law. The issue I see is if a child drown in the pool and you disable door locks most likely your home owners insurance won't cover a lawsuit.

Since my pool was built prior to the enactment of the law I have an exemption.

You can read the exemptions even has one in there if no kids are living in the home which are below 6 years old.

We don't have kids, but few friends have brought their kids over who were not responsible so we just didn't invite them back over again any pool party's.

We have decided we will keep up our pool fence even after all of our kids can fully swim. I've read too many stories of children drowning in pools when they were at a friend's home for a party. While it's the parents fault for not watching their child and knowing there was an open pool, I still would struggle greatly if that happened on my property. We entertain a lot so for us it will always just be there as a safety measure.

If they are at a pool party and already at the pool, a pool fence or self closing door wouldn't matter, adult supervision would. If they are in the house, they still would have difficulty opening my slider because the handle is still high and out of reach and it takes two hands. We just disengaged the self closing part of it so that we can keep it open.

If the door is left open and the law says suppose to close automatically then I don't know maybe home owners still cover it. Insurance companies rather not pay only take your premium.

I guess what I was trying to say is I'm not worried about insurance, we've got the safety part covered.
