Hate to sound negative but: this is Pennsylvania.

Not only is archaic planning the norm and accepted, but the usual rural vs. city "why should I pay for XYZ" applies again and again. It will spawn the same discussions and create the same divide between us.

Wouldn't be surprised if some pockets are being lined to brush aside biking and pedestrian projects as well. Again, this is Pennsylvania.

Try to get from the Northside to The West End to see how little PennDot cars about pedestrians or bikes.

No surprise here. Many of the suburbs in this area don't even have sidewalks.

Many of the city streets don't have sidewalks here. Or they only have them one side.

You can run right across the West End Bridge during the marathon. It's not like you're going to cross it on foot otherwise. Plus, the people in the West End turn out to cheer in large numbers.

I've crossed it on foot. You get some decent views of the city you wouldn't get otherwise. That's not saying walking TO it is all that pleasant, especially on the south shore.

I've done that four times; the bridge is a tougher hill than it looks, especially after tearing down Western Avenue from Allegheny. No running for me this year as I just had back surgery.

I used to work at the Cardello Building and we'd walk over to Tartine for lunch some times in the last year and the it's a joke how badly that trip is designed for pedestrians. And how seldom anyone ever bothers to clean those walkways.
