And at in-state tuition rate rather than Columbia or NYU's $50,000+.

It is worth nothing that U.S. News ranks CMU #1 for graduate programs in computer science...

Business Insider has it 4th behind MIT, Cal Tech and Stanford.

Forbes has it 6th, but it's a global list.

You people are placing way too much emphasis on CMU as the key component for selection. If Amazon was opening a Robotics Lab, or a Computer Lab, or some other directly related business, then yes, CMU would be the Key component for selection. Amazon is opening a 2nd Headquarters BUSINESS, with a technical component. They will need a mix of disciplines to make such a huge venture successful. Amazon is planning to visit each of the 20 cities to review their Dog and Pony show, likely including the size of their proposed "contribution", if selected. The content of these visits is speculated to be kept secret, under pain of elimination.

I went to Rutgers and what you are describing is exactly what most people do. I interned once a week in New York as a Junior (didn't take classes that day) and when we all turned 21 we went to a lot of New York bars on weekends etc..

You basically step off the Train from New York and you are literally on the campus.

Unlike a lot of college towns in the middle of nowhere where everything revolves around the school, there are a lot of options at Rutgers. Direct Train to New York, the beach is 45 mins away, Phili is a little over an hour by car etc..

Agreed. has anyone here ever worked in a corporate headquarters. I have. It's a lot of lawyers, accountants, risk management, Executive level type people. There will be techie people there too but I'd say that Pitt is just as much and possibly more of an asset in certain areas just for its sheer size and also very good ranking.

Most of the locations for HQ2 are going to fit the bill for students. What's great about Pittsburgh and what sets it apart from other locations is you have one of the best tech schools in the world and also Pitt which is an excellent compliment. Also decent in tech and strong in a lot of other relevant areas and it's like 4x bigger than CMU.

Also most companies don't just recruit at one school. Penn State main Campus will be a place that i'm sure would also be heavily recruited and i'm sure a lot of other smaller schools in the region.

and don't think a western PA headquarters isn't going to recruit Ohio State and Michigan as well. all are in play.

Amazon is also looking for a "pipeline" of employees. This might be a weak point for Pittsburgh, but CMU and Pitt will help a lot.

No, we are not. It's part of the discussion. This discussion has been going on for some time.

Welcome to the discussion. It's always amusing when biased outsiders come in to downplay things because, well, I'll just stop there.

Don't be such an A$$. I was born in Pittsburgh. "Outsiders" ? This is a PUBLIC Forum. I can state my opinion anyway I like and in any Forum that I choose, as long as it doesn't violate the Forum rules.
