It was a field trip the parents gave permission for. While it's not something I would have done given the current climate in the US, before Youtube this wouldn't have been an issue. So I have to ask myself what the real problem here is.
I've never heard of a public school doing field trips to churches and worshipping once they got there.
I'd say the issue is separation of church and state here.

Maybe it's that the parents were not told exactly what the field trip would entail. It sounds like a bait and switch.
As a parent, most want to control where their kids worship.
Do you think Muslim parents would be pleased if they went to a Christian church and worshiped Jesus Christ without their permission?
