Funny, we had a extremely gay sailor on our base and Command, despite the bleeding obvious, didn't do a thing until he decided that he just didn't want to be in the military any longer and wen to Command and stated the bloody obvious, and this was 15 years before DADT. Of that 13,000 I am sure that there were quite a few who say outing themselves as being an easy ticket out of military service. But unlike tens of thousands of straight troops who have to find ever more inventive ways to get an early discharge, gays have had an automatic get out the military free card. Remove the card and a lot of troops who signed on the dotted line will just have to man or woman up and serve their time just like the thousands of straights who come to find that military life ain't what they thought it would be.
Well, I know a perfectly straight guy who hated his job and wanted out so bad that he went to the commander and told him he was having thoughts about having sex with some of the guys in the unit.
Needless to say, he got his discharge. Notice he said having thoughts, not actually doing anything.
What an absurd topic. As if our military didn't have enough problems fighting two useless wars and attempting to convert its soldiers into social workers while trying to avoid stepping on a land mine, now they've got to think about whether they've offended Private Benjamin by refusing to bend over in the shower.

It takes all kinds.
Yes. If there is ever an affirmative action program for gays in government employment (as has been proposed), many straight people will suddenly discover that they are gay. There are also women in the military that get pregnant to avoid going to combat zones.
ok, a serious question... How many flaming homo's really want to join the military? I'm sure there will be many who do join now. Most of them will be joining for the wrong reasons, and they will be out of the military w/i a year. People need to realize that when you are in the military you must sacrifice the civilian lifestyle that you want to live. Gays will also have to choose whether they want to serve america, or whether they want to march in gay pride parades. No matter what a judge says... you can't do both
Well then maybe the govt. should start the draft again. So people like you can serve our country.
You should be thankful that anyone even wants to go into the military these days.
Straight people now also have an 'easy ticket' out of military service - all they have to do is say they are gay.
What does having gays in the military have do do with your comment? If DADT is repealed, and gays can serve openly, that avenue will go away.
Women have always been able to get out with pregnancy.
Remember, not too long ago, some dingbat woman had no one to leave her kid with?
Guess what, with DADT repealed, that won't be an option.
They have not changed the UCMJ. Sodomy is still a crime. Yes, I have seen people court martialed for it. As a career Law Enforcement Specialist I encountered cases of homsexual rape and forcable sodomy at every base I was stationed at. Don't get drunk and pass out in your "buddies" room. You might not like what is happening when you wake up.
Actually, Lawrence v. Texas did in fact decriminalize consensual sodomy in the military (forceable sodomy, fraternization involving sodomy, etc. are still illegal in the military). See United States v. Kenneth M. Bullock (US Army Court of Criminal Appeals).

I should be thankful? Are you currently serving? Have you ever served?
And yes, maybe we should bring back the draft. Maybe the realities of war will hit home with more Americans if they feel it first hand and not just through the media. I've been serving for 20 yrs
Terrific story here - I hope he gets to stay this time
"Lt. Dan Choi, the Iraq war veteran, Arab linguist, and West Point grad turned “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal activist, today got what he had said he wanted from day one: the opportunity to serve his country in the armed forces again. "
"Mr. Cooper, a member of the Army Reserve, said that he was taking part in training last week at Fort Huachuca in Arizona when the injunction was issued, and that he was surprised by the lack of visible opposition or outcry.
He likened it to a “giant shoulder shrug of ‘so what?’ ”
Most of the people he was with, he added, were younger members of the service, and “a few people actually thought repeal had already occurred.”"

I was thinking the same thing about how many gays really join. In this economic climate, your going to get your fair show of folks who join for the wrong reasons, gay or no gay. Don't you have to enlist for at least 3-4 years?
I've wondered if the gays in military issue is blown out of proportion and is simply being used, as a way to remove one of very few remaining exemptions to being drafted when they bring it back
