You live in Europe, no?
HI is not that remote to people in the US. MIddle class US people frequently take Hawaiian .
That depends on where you situate Ohio on a world map.
Most people I know have never been to Hawaii, when asked the question the answer is . "Maybe one day."
They do vote though.
When it comes to the middle class they better hurry up. The way the economy is going, Weekends to Hawaii may soon become a thing of the past.
You know, it's funny you say that. I've felt that way with all this wailing and gnashing of teeth over Obama doing things that EVERY OTHER PRESIDENT has done, starting with the pre-inaugural parties. I recall some dipstick on FOX saying they should have given that money to the poor. Even Jesus said the poor will always be with us and it's OK to spend money on other things once in a while. His night out with Michelle in NYC (when he was barely gone from DC for 24 hours, and was fulfilling a campaign promise he made to her); his presiding over an annual picnic (get the point here, it was something ongoing) fir congressional families, every frickin' vacation AND overseas business trip, etc, etc, etc.
.
There is not one day we don’t hear about budget cuts, restrictions, sacrifices.
I should have understood a long time ago that it never applies to the people in charge.

Since when has Obama told any family to cut their personal budget, that their travel is restricted, or that they need to make a sacrifice?
Also, If I remember well, this country is still at war.
Thousands of people constantly worry about their kids or their relatives that have been sent abroad. Young soldiers are being killed in an almost daily basis, others come home with brain damage, with missing limbs, without a face, without the prospect of a future life.
While this is going on, is it absolutely indispensable that the Commander in Chief be seen enjoying life at its fullest.

IIRC, Roosevelt died at his vacation retreat in Warm Springs, GA (about as accessible as Hawaii from DC in 1945) with his mistress at his side, during wartime. What do you expect the president to do?

I find it quite interesting that the Obamas are chided for what many would consider average spending for an upper class American family while the much worshipped (by Republicans ) Reagans spent way more lavishly than the Obamas by far....and during a recession.
Nancy Reagan spent nearly a quarter of a million dollars on china for the White House, gave nearly 60 (expensive) state dinners at the WH.....and not to mention the fact that she spent thousands upon thousands on haute couture specially made for her by designers Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass.....and all of this during a recession in America amidst a growing problem with homelessness.
It's just a small group of idiots who don't even believe what they are saying themselves. For whatever reason they just want attention and can only get it by acting like a fool.
