No you don't have to, but you would have to be blind to ignore the remarkable contrast.

Yes, but considering what's going on with this situation, is compare and contrast really a necessity at this point in time?

Of course people would comment at this time, it's topical.

The Japanese trust their government. The US is dog eat dog, better get yours now, type of system. I'm fine with our system but it is what it is. Add that there is little trust in the way our elected officials act (Rep or Dem).

There was no rioting/looting in Japan because of that country's strong social safety nets and central government which reassured the Japanese that they will not be abandoned to fend for themselves in times of crisis. Hence there was no need for them to loot or to riot.

Ironically, these same safety nets are being gutted by moronic Republican ideology here in the US. The riots during Katrina may well have been the direct result of the Republican mantra of "every man for himself/survival of the fittest". When people feel that they are being abandoned by their government - that they must solve their own problems - are you really surprised when people take matters into their own hands?

Exactly. When the big one hits Los Angeles there will be looting, there will be rioting, and there will be assimilated Japanese-Americans participating in looting and rioting. Count on it!

If they're sending good guys into a busted Nuclear reactor what do you think they would do to a bad guy rioting and looting in the street?

I guess also it depends on your definition of "looting" and "finding". Apparently the actions are the same, but the language is quite different.

With a minority Christian population. No Bible, Christian god or prayers in their schools and government. They operate on humanist values.

A conservative in Japan (and most other foreign countries) is more comparable to an American centrist or liberal.
