I was waiting for someone to say: Their ex wife or ex husband. ON a serious note,

The United States (and its allies) turning a blind eye to the holocaust.

2. An appalling or atrocious act, situation, or object, especially an act of unusual or illegal cruelty inflicted by an armed force on civilians or prisoners.

How can the institution of slavery be an atrocity?

I'll might agree with you on the american Indian thing (although they were doing it to themselves before mighty whitey came along) but Slavery was an accepted pratice world wide throughout history even on this continent before MW got here.........
Well, it certainly wasn't happytime and a walk in the park for the slaves.

9-11 as an atrocity in the true sense, because 9-11 was not an act committed by a government or military force against its own citizens. 9-11 was an act of war, just as the bombing of Pearl Harbor, one nation invading another, etc.

American slavery, the Dafur genocide, Rwanda genocide, Pol Pot and the killing fields of Cambodia, Serbian genocide, Germany's Jewish holocaust, Idi Amin's genocide, etc., were all atrocious acts of government or military against it's own civilian citizens.

The question asked about atrocities ON US SOIL. The Jewish holocaust took place on German soil.
