I never said that once. Stop with the talking points, it's so predictable. Why shouldn't someone have to fork over 100% of the cost of education?? That's a ridiculous statement. The poor have every right that the middle and upper classes have. Everyone has to pay their way through school, why should the poor be an exception?
No sugar coating is necessary. I don't support most social welfare programs b/c I think people should earn their keep. There's nothing wrong with that. Again, if someone has the desire to go to college, it's up to them to figure out the financing, not the taxpayer.
If the poor can't afford something, they shouldn't have it. That's how it goes. If they have the drive to do something and improve their lot in life, they will work for it, just like any middle class person would. The wealthy are NOT the only people who go to college, in case you haven't noticed.
Honestly, this entire argument is just liberal hyperbole. The entitlement in this country, especially on this forum, is sickening.
Because the poor can't pay for college! Those pampered rich kids are fortunate enough to have their parents take on the costs. How are the poor supposed to pay for it without disabling their lives with dozens of thousands of dollars in debt?

They are not getting rid of all student aid.
The average Pell grant is $5K and they are talking of reducing it by $1K to an average of $4K.
So what does a student do..why get $1K more in their direct student loan, a different program, one where they have to pay back the loan after they graduate.
And people have a problem with this ? EVERYONE has to tighten their belts here..the US is broke and cannot be giving away money it does not have anymore. Wake up..this is the NEW America, one where everyone cannot get everything they want for free.

In the meantime, college costs will go up by well over $1000/yr at most schools.
If the government defaults, many students would have to leave school because the government would stop giving loans and grants. Do Republicans care?
Well, of course Republicans don't care. Thats why they're Republicans! Duh! These creatures have no concept of empathy. Why lend a hand to someone else if it doesn't directly, personally benefit yourself? Preferably in terms of cold hard cash?
It's all about "I got mine and to hell with you getting yours."
They're afraid that if they help someone get an education that they'll turn out to be liberal.
And of course, uneducated people are much easier to manipulate. Where do you think FOX "News" finds it's audience? Do you think you'll find any MENSA members in the Tea Party?
An educated individual is a danger to conservatives!
So, naturally, they're gonna try to end student loans and Pell Grants!

I hope you realize how ridiculous this sounds.
What do "the rich" have to do with the poor paying for college?
Just so you know, not everyone has a free ride through college, no matter who their parents are.
How many middle class folks have to "disable their lives" and go into debt to get through college?
Until you have some statistics, stop with the ridiculous assertions.
As an aside, it sounds like you have some jealousy issues to get past.
Why does everybody assume College is the pathway to prosperity? Most people I know who went to college are saddled with a huge studen loan debt and are making not much more than their GED friends. College and the student loan system is just another way for Washington to tap into our wealth.

It's not something everyone needs but it's the ONLY pathway if you want to be a professional-something.

Says who? I work at a fortune 500 company and there are many people in the upper ranks who did not start with a bachelors. In fact most of them got their 2 year tech degree just to get their foot in the door of a career they were passionate about. Now later on many got their MBAs, but that is an entirely different endeavour.
If you have the drive, the determination and the ability an employer would be stupid not to hire you and let you go to their competition.
