It used to be if you were poor you didn't get to go to college unless you got a scholarship. I'm not sure what was wrong with this idea. Every society needs wage slaves!!!

They should just be given taxpayer money and allowed to go to the school of their choice and study for the occupation of their choice regardless.
Society OWES them don't you see.

This is how the liberals view this IMO. The helpless poor cannot do it by themselves; they have to have government taxpayer support.
One of our sons attended an expensive college and ended up with about $20K in student loans (he had received grants and scholarships, too). So after college, he joined the military -they completely wrote off his student loans by the time he finished his tour of duty.

You are so right. There are many ways to finance a college education.

And who says you need to take a full load each semester ?
And who says you have to take day classes ?

I put myself through college. Joined the reserves and got the GI Bill which covered CC costs for 2 years while working a p/t job. Once at the university I had 3 p/t jobs to cover the shortfall.

That was 2 years of hard work and no social life. But I ended up with a BS degree and owing a whopping $32 on my credit card for that last semester's books.

I also took advantage of co-op jobs during the summer between junior/senior year which paid a very high salary for 2 months while keeping those p/t jobs.

^^It's kind of stupid to sign your life away for 4-6 years for $20k in loans.

But smart to sign up for programs that will forgive the debt ..military and teaching is another one that will forgive all/part of your student loans.

"Hope and change" for graduate students. Basically, they'll be subsidizing loans for more 4 year underwater basketweaving majors in exchange for removing subsidies for Masters/Ph.D. researchers.

Debt deal increases Pell grants, but shifts burden to graduate students

Here's the thing, folks. If you want an education, you can get it. It may mean sacrificing your lifestyle and living w/ a group of folks in order to get cheap rent, while working several part time jobs (wh/ is what I did). I didn't have a social life; didn't have cool clothes; had a rat trap car that other students made fun of (their parents provided their cars). It was a struggle to EAT.

So don't tell me how impossible it is to get an education if you don't have $$$ or a family to help you. Most folks want it all and want it fast. We have been living in a society that has made it easy to have the big house w/o making any sacrifices to earn a downpayment. We have made it easy to finance a car, even with bad credit. We have made it easy for people to lie their way into the welfare rolls while lying and gaming the system.

I never stooped that low as to do what I saw others doing to get some of the taxpayer pie. Why? One reason. Personal responsibility. I was taught the world didn't owe me SQUAT. Why do so many people in generations younger than mine think they are owed something????

Sign your life away? There are some of us who consider military service an honorable pursuit.

My hubby received a direct commission in the Army Medical Services Corp (Viet Nam). My dad was a Marine (Korea) who used the GI bill to finance his undergrad degree.

Your attitude is insulting, sir. God bless those who choose to serve all of us by choosing voluntary service in the military.

Parts of socialism has crept into our society..that's what.
An entitlement mentality supported by and funded by the government.

Just like the DOJ thinks lack of income should not prevent you from owning a home and applying for a mortgage. Now think about that one.

Plus, you learn valuable leadership and trade skills in the military. I wish I was in the military back in the day. Would've eliminated that liberal punk attitude I had in my early 20s.
