The last time I checked, the First Lady wasn't elected to any office, so it makes no difference how much time she spends on vacation.
There's only one slight difference here.

Her vacation is on our dime.

Their vacation is on their dime.

So it actually DOES make a difference how much time she spends on vacation......because we're paying for those vacations.

I really don't care how much vacation the First Lady takes. All I ask of her is to not seriously embarrass us. I don't like her husband very much but these kinds of threads don't solve any problems or advance discussions on policy.

Well technically no. Congress is paid by tax dollars to be at work. When they take vacation they still get paid, so our tax dollars are still being paid to these guys when they are on vacation.

Our tax dollars pay a salary to the president, not his wife. If they decide to spend some of the money he gets from his salary to send her on vacation, that has nothing to do with any of us.

Yes, Congress is paid to be at work, I suppose. Though I think they do less damage when they aren't at work, so perhaps it's a better thing they are gone more often than not.

While the president does draw a salary from the taxpayers, it's unlikely he's funding the vacations. After all, she doesn't fly Southwest, and certainly doesn't stay at a Holiday Inn. The taxpayers spend millions to send her on vacation. Even left-leaning Ariana Huffington agrees:

Does it bother you that the Secret Service protects and travels with former fist families for as long as they live. Does it bother you when president and vice president nominees and their families receive Secret Service protection 24/7, regardless to what part of the globe they fly into for fund raising din-dins with foreign interests?

From United States Secret Service

In 1965, Congress authorized the Secret Service (Public Law 89-186) to protect a former president and his/her spouse during their lifetime, unless they decline protection. In 1997, Congress enacted legislation (Public Law 103-329) that limits Secret Service protection for former presidents to 10 years after leaving office. Under this new law, individuals who are in office before January 1, 1997, will continue to receive Secret Service protection for their lifetime. Individuals elected to office after that time will receive protection for 10 years after leaving office. Therefore, President Clinton will be the last president to receive lifetime protection.

Thankfully, we're only on the hook for Clinton, and maybe Viagra will call him south early. 10 years is exactly 10 years too long for "ex-presidents and their families", though.
