Probably a lot of the people living near the park want something done about the vagrants and street walkers, they don't want it filled with "ladies of the night" working it and picking up johns there.

A park belongs to the taxpayers, not to her exclusively.

you need your ID to fricking step outside and go for a walk?

1939 Berlin was a very happy and safe place to live if you were a law-abiding German citizen.

No it's not. There aren't even any laws out there that require you to have any form of ID.

The woman in this story was willing and able to identify herself. The arresting officer will likely face disciplinary action and the police force may be sued. Contrast this with 1939 Berlin.

There is police malfeasance, crime, and such all over the country every day, and has been since the dawn of society (or police officers). All these posts of "Here's a crime, OMG black people these days!" or "Here's a crime, OMG socialism in America!" or "Here's a crime, OMG hippies!", or "Here's a crime, we now live in a totalitarian dystopia!" are ridiculous. Like someone glued to a police scanner, fretting and fuming.
I'm glad I don't live in your world.

But there is more to it. She was in a park after hours. Many city parks are closed at certain times and for good reason -- the neighborhood that pays for the park doesn't want the vagrants taking them over.

How is this girl different than any other vagrant? Is it because she's white and her parents have money that she thinks she's exceptional?

Some friend..........

"Early in the morning on Oct. 22, a Saturday, Ms. Zucker, 21, and her friend Alex Fischer, also 21, were stopped by the police in Riverside Park and given tickets for trespassing. Mr. Fischer was permitted to leave after he produced his driver’s license. But Ms. Zucker, on a visit to New York City with a group of Carnegie Mellon University seniors looking for jobs in design industries, had left her wallet in a hotel two blocks away. "

I've bailed some friends out of jail. This guy couldn't even bring down her ID.

"Twice, she said, the officer told her not to call him by a specific foul term."

Yeah she was a saint I'm sure. Mess with a bull get the horns. For those of you whining about laws trespassing is against the law which is why she was taken. With all the nonsense happening in NY they are taking out the trash. She learned a valuable lesson. All the he said she said BS is just that. All crap she apparently made up. Don't worry mommy and daddy will take care of her and give her proper instructions next time she wants to play protestor.

There was an op ed in the local paper the other day. Last year the cops went and cleaned out all these homeless camps around downtown, brought in dozers and just ran em over and said people can't be there all hours etc. The author wanted to know why the small group of protestors around here aren't treated the same way?

I wasn't commenting on this story per se. Several people have said in this thread that the law requires that you carry (presumably government issued) ID at all times. I was just pointing out that's false. Not only do you not ever have to carry ID - you don't even have to have an ID.

As to the story, it's ridiculous to have kept her for 36 hours using shift changes and such as excuses. Just take her straight from the park to the hotel to get her ID, issue a ticket, then let her go. That's what, a total of 30 minutes in custody? - plus it doesn't use up police resources: gas for driving her around, I assume they fed her 3 or 4 times during those 36 hours, they had to wash the linens she used, etc.

Also, I find the law she violated stupid. It's one I actually I break somewhat regularly. I'm a runner and often up late nights. When it's hot out in the summer, I sometimes like to take my run between 11pm-1am. I don't like to run on concrete or asphalt (it destroys your legs), so I do it in the park. I've never understood why it's illegal for me to do that.

Then don't complain if your detained. Like a previous poster said there are plenty of laws that cops can decide to enforce or "let slide" at their discretion. If your running and they stop you and say lets see some ID and what are you doing out here they will most likely let you go on your way end of story. If you want to start some BS they can say ok you wanna play games lets go downtown and play.
