That's incorrect. My great grandparents felt that way about homosexuality because they believed the (false) idea that homosexuality is fundamentally immoral, not because they believed homosexuals lacked the capability of informed consent.

Because that's the way that societies function. Rules, be they law or simply tolerated/accepted behaviors, have to be established so that people can peacefully coexist.
