I raised my kid so he would not allow himself to be raped. What is wrong with kids that are too damn dumb not to know to resist someone sticking their penis up the kid's ass? If ya over 9 ya gotta be pretty stupid.
So hopefully everyone has got past the troll post..........
This is a far bigger thing than Paterno or PennState. It's what we have turned higher education into. For many their only reason for being is Saturday afternoons in the fall. We give thousands of "students" every year a free education that many of them have absolutely no intention of completing. (yes, I know many others will). We are now debating whether or not we should along with a scholorship, pay them to play.
Football and basketball has far too much influence on our education system.
But the most vocal of the indictments here, beginning with Post #1, represent what they always have ... a venomous hatred just looking for someone else to serve as a target -- possibly a release for their own insecurities.
If we all aren't going to unite in common hatred against pedophiles and their enablers who seek to profit at the expense of children's innocence, then we might as well give up on the human race right now. I, for one, think that the OP was dead on with his post!!!!!

Where do those teams get the money for those scholarships?
I want to add that my favorite basketball team has a problem with graduating their players, those who don't go pro before graduation. this year they had three seniors and all of them graduated and that has been going on for some time.
Well yeah the universities do provide the facilities for the teams to play in but I am not too sure that is too much to ask.
As one who earned two college degrees, BS and MS, may I say that if my high school hadn't had those two sports I would never have graduated from it let alone go on to college where I wasn't good enough to participate in the sports. Yep, those sports do do some kids a lot of good.
Perhaps that is the real problem. I'm not sure what can be done about it. I'm open to suggestions.
Wondering...

Maybe term limits? I don't know. I live in a suburb of a college town (Boulder); I lived in Champaign, IL; my DH is from Omaha where they take the huskers very seriously, and I've just never seen anyone as deified as Joe Pa.

Sports are fine in school. Their influence is the problem. Many kids stay in school just to play sports. If there is enough money to pay people to play while already getting a free education, there is enough to spread that money to those wanting to be teachers.

Profit?? Profit had little to do with it, except at the very top -- in the minds of a handful of schlockmeisters with which most PSU alumni don't identify. Those individuals, and a spineless Board of Trustees who immediately reverted to a "CYA" mode of thinkng are almost as disgusting as Sandusky. But the fact that a number of people at this site whose sentiments are known to be out there in Deep Left Field are the first to scream the loudest gives your real agenda away.
You use any sensitive and sensible person's revulsion against pedophilia to attack an institution which many of us still regard in an entirely different way, and for entirely different reasons.
Deep down inside, I suspect you get some marginal (and twisted) gratification from participating in what might be described, in a cybernetic sense, as mob action. In that respect the handful of barflies who overturned one news van and were then painted as "inciting a riot" were, at least, a tiny bit more direct about it.

Did not you teach your children how not to be victims?
