Extra parental tutoring for underachieving - primarily minority - students will lower the standards for everybody?
No. Read what my response and the statement I was responding to. Extra tutoring is good and can only help. But widespread closing the gap is not gonna happen and it wouldnt surprise me if they lowered the standards for everyone in order for it to appear like the gap was closed.
There is a difference in working on closing the achivement gap and closing the gap. If you never work to close the achievement gap, the second will also never happen.
Yes I realize this. I just said good luck because it hasnt happened in half a century of trying.
More backwards liberal logic- we must embrace racism against whites in order to right past wrongs against 'people of color'.
This looks like a good thread to dump this informative link again-
Rich, Black, Flunking Cal Professor John Ogbu thinks he knows why rich black kids are failing in school. Nobody wants to hear it.
Ogbu concluded that the average black student in Shaker Heights put little effort into schoolwork and was part of a peer culture that looked down on academic success as "acting white." Although he noted that other factors also play a role, and doesn't deny that there may be antiblack sentiment in the district, he concluded that discrimination alone could not explain the gap.
"The black parents feel it is their role to move to Shaker Heights, pay the higher taxes so their kids could graduate from Shaker, and that's where their role stops," Ogbu says during an interview at his home in the Oakland hills. "They believe the school system should take care of the rest. They didn't supervise their children that much. They didn't make sure their children did their homework. That's not how other ethnic groups think."
In short- you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Academic achievement starts at home with the kid's parents taking an active interest and role in their development well before kindergarten, not by banning white children from classes. How could that even remotely be considered progressive?
Good grief, read more than the OP before commenting.

Saved this article! Just skimmed it, but it seems very fair. He did not just criticize African-Americans. He also said the following...
Quote:
In Ogbu's work with other American minority groups, the anthropologist has identified a core distinction that he believes is central to academic success or failure. It is the idea of voluntary, versus involuntary, minorities. People who voluntarily immigrate to the United States always do better than the involuntary immigrants, he believes. "I call Chicanos and Native Americans and blacks 'involuntary minorities,'" he says. "They joined American society against their will. They were enslaved or conquered." Ogbu sees this distinction as critical for long-term success in and out of school.
"Blacks say Standard English is being imposed on them," he says. "That's not what the Chinese say, or the Ibo from Nigeria. You come from the outside and you know you have to learn Standard English, or you won't do well in school. And you don't say whites are imposing on you. The Indians and blacks say, 'Whites took away our language and forced us to learn their language. They caused the problem.'"
He's also right about acting like "voluntary immigrants." It is interesting to note that some studies have found when recent people of African origin who come as voluntary immigrants become more Americanized and lose their connection with their cultures of origin, that's when their performances start falling. Perhaps that's not the best way to explain it, but one can get the gist.
Interesting also that he made distinction between "blacks" and an Ibo from Nigeria, latter of which the government, "whites" and many others would try to classify as 'black" too. It says something about use of the term to classify people of African origins. Anyway, there's a lot of interesting stuff in that article.

So, why is he an idiot? And we have every right to "complain about sources," when the source is biased and loaded with inaccurate & dishonest conclusions. This guy sounds like the Republican version of Michael Moore, and if I'd posted an inflammatory thread with Moore as my source, you guys would totally call me out for that - you know it, I know it, so spare me the self-righteous nonsense.
No source crybabies just have nothing to back up their argument so they cry about sources. I hear many just dismiss something from FOX when many times it's just a story they run after picking it up from AP or wherever. CBS had the same story. This story isn't from Moore or anybody else it's from the local CBS affilitiate citing parents concerns and an interview with one of the said parents who played a message directly left on her phone by the principal in question. To you that's bias. So instead of crying about sources perhaps find out what is going on before spewing your garbage next time. I won't hold my breath as that is all you do though.
Again, while focused on increasing minority achievement, whites are welcome. You keep speaking as if they're not.
It doesn't promote racism. It's an attempt to remedy a problem that's come about due to generational racism and racial oppression. And no such "whites only" programs are going to be formed in retaliatory response. The PASS program has been around for years and no such thing has occurred. This area is not populated with a bunch insecure bigots who view race as an us vs. them construct.
Really? Then why the controversy? Why did parents have to raise awareness in a school environment about this? Seems there is more going on than some want to admit.

Well, there really is not any controversy. This was an extremely minor thing that was addressed right way.
The problem was with the incorrect wording and the lack of communication. If I were a parent and got a sign-up flyer for colored students only tutoring, I too would have called the school and asked what the hell was going on. They would have then explained the flyer was mistaken - that there is a parent organization that works with the school called PASS that is trying to close the minority student achievement gap, and as part of that effort those parents offer tutoring primarily for struggling minority students, but that non-minority students are also welcome, and that this parent organized tutoring is separate from the general, school-run tutoring programs that are open to all.
A normal, reasonable person would respond by saying "Oh, that makes sense. I support that, but next time pelase communicate better." An insecure bigot who views race as an us vs. them construct would respond by saying "That's a racist attack on whites, so I am going to form my own white-students only tutoring program to balance things out." This area isn't populated with insecure bigots who view race as an us vs. them construct, so the prediction you guaranteed would happen has not happened.
Alas, his progress as both warrior and filmmaker stalled when he went on another epic booze-and-dope binge. When he got out of rehab, he hired an ex-con to keep him sober but the two of them ended up smoking meth and making a porn movie starring Dollard and the ex-con's girlfriend.
