You broke the rules and didn't die.... so somehow you and your parents are better than that kid & his b/c when he broke the rules, he died?

I knew better growing up. My parents made sure I knew better. They also assured me that if I ever did get in a bind, to call them. I didnt matter what the situation was.
Where does it say that the father knew his son was out drinking?

No. You're just looking to blame an unfortunate accident on them being chitty parents.

So I guess you had chitty parents too. And anything unfortunate that happened to you was due to their chittiness?

It is just an unfortunate accident. Not saying the parents were chitty. But, with as much crap that happens at the wee hours of the morning when teens should be home should start raising concern on what parents are, or not, doing to know what their kids are doing.

The reason I started to look more at the father is because he is already pointing. If he is trying to blame something himself, usually that is a sign of covering up their mistake.

I never, ever, got drunk and climbed through a window when I came home

Might be something to do with growing up in an apartment

Or could he be trying to clear the air so that people recognize it as an accident, and not some justified shooting of a thief/murderer/etc?
