I think the majority of Americans in 2008 wanted something different for healthcare. This extreme was not the answer. While it is a moot point today, here's an article I found some time ago that gave some great alternatives. Notice option #18. Competition is the best price creator.
My favorite option is competing across state lines.
But the goal of Obama was not really Obamacare--it was the single payer option, providing everyone with lower quality healthcare. I understand many people think it will be wonderful.

As far as going back to 2008 that was simply not working at all. The private insurance products were offering less each year, excluding an increasing number of people and rapidly losing a lot of customers.
In truth, Obamacare is the crutch propping up these insurance companies today. As I've written before its their lifeline. Without it they'll fold.
But what about now? No one has pre-existing conditions?
That's becsue they didn't get insurance before they got sick. This law if worked as intended (which it won't) mandates that everyone have insurance, you can't be denied insurance when you get sick if you already have it.
Look, while I can sympathize with your issue, do you truly not see that those were pawns. You are a pawn. Explain to me how the main goal being help those who cant afford it, results in the tens of thousands of pages mess, and thousands or rules/regs?
You put to much faith in those who say they care for you. Those in DC that say they want to help you. When they start using you as a prop, you better watch their other hand. The only thing that made it about helping the uninsured, was the rhetoric and props they used to get it to pass. Not to mention back room deals and bribes.
Since before no healthcare insurance company would sell me insurance at any price, and now they will have to, why would I feel like a pawn?

There's universal healthcare in Canada, and they do not have lower quality healthcare. In fact, on many health outcome measures they beat the U.S., and at about half the cost.

Because you will have to have insurance. You've been paying out of pocket. Your premiums will be larger than your out of pocket - perhaps substantially more. And you won't have the option to say "no".
Did you try and get insurance before your condition?
If I go out and crash my car should I be able to get retroactive insurance?
I did have healthcare insurance when I got cancer, and I was covered during treatment. It was later, when I left that job, that I had to rely on my own insurance payments. No company would sell it to me, and I was in some kind of expensive high-risk government pool. And then I had a gap, and the high-risk government program would not take me back, and then no company would sell it to me.
The premiums would be likely be larger than your actual costs...
Darn right if your lucky.Lost ins in 87 due to cancer and figure I saved over 40.000 in premiums and pay 75.00 a year cash in anual checkups and maybe 50.00 for a shot of frozen nitrogen, when insured the checkups were 350.00 cash discounts rock

Because that was in no way their goal. They, meaning the government, now have their foot in the door to nearly every aspect of our lives. This is the first step to more power for them. Health care gives them so many avenues into our lives.
And while it may help you initially, the costs for the country, businesses and others will out weigh any benefits. As someone said, change or improvement was needed, but to go the route they took will be much worse than you imagine.
But hey, we'll see how you feel about it in a couple of years when we really start seeing the ill affects of it all. Keep an eye out on it all next year.
